Seems like a good mod is the 17*HPOP. What does the 17* degee refer to, what's involved in the install and what are the expected power increases? Are these aftermarket or available from Ford and how much should I expect to pay for one?

A 17*HPOP is a stock SD oil pump off the newer 7.3. It is a great mod if you have injectors or are planning on going with a set. They don't get starved out like our stock HPOP does. Yes, you can get them from ford. I myself don't know what the 17* crap is about but there are a couple that should be able to shed some light on the subject. I heard its a time consuming install, thus why i haven't done it yet but i need to get it done with these bigger squirters i have now. Hope this sheds some light on the subject for ya
here is my best description to this question. the hpop is a piston pump with pistons held in a cartriage that reminds me a revolver (the gun) the pistons go where the bullets would and have a spring in the bore with them. the cartriage is connectoed to the rotating shaft. the piston ride against a ramp to counter act the spring but also is how the pistons are moved for the pump action. so the pistons ride rotate along this ramp that is in a wave type form. so the 15* pump has a 15* incline and the 17* pump has a 17* incline therefore allowing more pumping capacity. longer stoke equals more volume.
oh yeah Steve is correct that the 17* pump is a late 99 to 03 7.3 stock pump. the early 99's still have the 15*. As for the swap its pretty easy as long as your truck is 96 and newer. if it a 96 and newer its drirect bolts up. I did mine with the fuel pump in about 3 hours. Oh yeah my pump was free too! Core engien sitting in the shop was a perfect donor. plus I have my 15* for when I built my own big oil!
if you have a 95 or 94.5 you need to do a anti-drain back mod. the early (95 and earlier) have a anti drain back valve in the pump. the 96 and later have a anti drain back built into the front cover.

that was all due to a very interesting post a while back. if you have no idea what I am talking about maybe Cody will fill you in!
Ya that guy never gave us an update of even took rubberduck up on his offer. Just for referance Luckcline used a stock 17* pump on his monster til 500 hp. It is much more efficient than the 15*
Would I benefit from one at this point with stock squirters? I don't plan to upgrade them unless they fail. Right now I'm concentrating on getting my Bronco back on the trail for a summer of wheelin fun.
BTW RubberDuck, great writeup on your install!
