Just a question for all you guys running 460's out there, i rebuilt a 460 stock with an edelbrock intake and carb, just wondering if a stock 460 rad will keep it nice and cool. Also are they 2 or 3 core rads.
I dont see any reason why not. As long as it is in good shape (fins are clean and straight and the coolant passages are clean) and the fan is pulling like its supposed to.
The stock rad is pretty darn big, not sure the exact specs or anything though.
The 1983 and '84 460 trucks came with a 3 core radiator. All the others were 4 core. The trouble is that most after market replacement rads are 3 core and they are marginal for cooling at best.
I have a 3 core radiator on my 460 and it does fine. It wanted to get a little hot until I put on a fan shroud. The fan shroud made a big difference. The fan shroud is almost as important to cooling as the radiator itself.
Mine had the shroud with the 3 core and with my camper on the truck (4800 lbs) there was a slow overheat that you could make go away, even by backing the time down to 30° total advance. Was even worse when I added the boat or quad trailer. Swapped out the 3 core for the 4 core and poof, no more over heat. Oh yeah, the 3 core and been in and cleaned and check, so it was working right. Probably was why Ford used the 4 core up to 1983 then in 1985 went back to the 4 core.
