Guys for some reason I can't get my engine to ping, I have set the base timing on my truck to 20* with the spout out and let the computer take over and it's not pinging? Is it possible to have the balancer in wrong, surely that can't happen since there is a keyway which allows the balancer to go on only one way?
How are you testing for pinging? Just reving the motor in park is not how you do it, you have to drive it and put the motor under load after it's completely warmed up.
what year is the 302? if its one from the 70s then its probably around 8-1 compression and probably wont ping... compression has to be 8.5+ or really bad quench or really crappy heads to ping. my 1972 lincoln would ping at 7.6-1 compression and 10 degrees initial on 89 octane just from the exceedingly crappy head design
