Mileage on engine
Timing setting
Condition of Distributor
Altitude you're driving in compared to the location when the setting of the timing took place.
Using Fresh Gasoline
I dont' know the mileage. The odometer reads 60k(160k,260k,360k I don't know ,but not much oil pressure) I put on new heads and an edlebrock performer intake when I got it(looked like the o.g block, there wasn't too big of a ridge). I can't see the timing marks due to all the pullys and belts in the way. I've timed it with a vac gauge. Dist seems to be in good order. Driving at sea level. Always fresh fuel. Pings @2200-on when throttle is pressed or under load/up hills.
a vacuum gauge is not a timing light. what is the correct vacuum reading? i smell my shorts to see how fast i'm going but i keep getting speeding tickets. ???
I timed mine with a vacuum gauge to see how close I could get it in time without a light. After I did I checked it with a light and found I had set it at 26 deg advance.
removing the pulley would not effect the timing that i'm aware of, but i'll bet there's an easier way. i wonder if you'd be able to see the marks better in the dark? you don't have to have the light at point blank range, the light will reflect off all the surfaces and light up the marks if you can even see them at all with the pulley on? like Towtruck says, setting timing for best vacuum is going to be extremely advanced, guaranteed to ping and eventually do damage to the engine.
I'm betting your timing is too far advanced. If you can crawl under your truck you should be able to find the timing marks pretty good. On my F-350, I ended up bumping the engine over and crawling under there so I could find the timing marks. I used some "white-out", and marked my damper on the mark I wanted to time it to. When I start the engine and set the timing, I can see that white line really easy, it's just a matter of lining up the pointer to my white line, real easy. If you can see your pointer from up top, you should be able to set the timing pretty easy. The timing light doesn't have to be real close. Good luck.
So what should I set the timing at? I know it is different than stock due to the performer intake. Is there any difference in timing of 4bbl vs 2bbl? If so what?
