I have a '95 f-350 with a 460 in it. When you accelerate it starts pinging really bad. I have started running 93 octane fuel but that does not seem to help. I have changed the fuel filter, put new plugs, wires, cap & rotor with no luck. I tried checking the timing but a can't seem to find any marks on the harmonic balancer. Also, when i try to start it cold it takes several attempts before it will start. Anyone have any suggestions?
To pull the codes find the EEC test harness back near the firewall and drivers inner fender. Put a jumper between the STI(Self-Test In) and Sig-Rtn lines and turn the key to run, codes will flash on the check engine light. See www.fordfuelinjection.com for more details and pics.
To set the timing you have to remove the spout plug to disable computer advance and that's in the TFI harness.
hooked the jumper wire up per the diagram but when i turn the key to on the check engine light never flashes. Also, the timing was at 12 and the sticker under the hood says 10. i set to ten and appears to have stopped pinging.
Can you hear the fuel pump relay click and the pump run for a second right after the key is turned? If not you have a wiring problem or blown fuse or worse case a faulty EEC. If the relay and pump do run as describe then the CE light is blown/missing.
the relay and pump do run. The engine light does come on when you first turn the key then it goes out. I left the key in the on position for about 1 minute and there wasd no flash. i tried it several times with the same result.
my mistake. it was the check engine light. i also noticed that i had the wire hooked to the self test out instead of the sig-rtn. i will give it another shot.
