Guys what are the symptoms of a harmonic balancer that has slipped on it's outer ring? I am trying to find the best timing for my 302 and I can't get the engine to ping at all lol!
pull the number one plug out and bring the piston as close to TDC as you can. I use a screwdriver to help feel the piston move, get it to the top and look at your balancer see where the marks are.
there are like three different places ford mounted the pointer.....
If you want to get it dead on, you can buy or make a piston stop out of an old sparkplug. Turn the engine till the #1 piston hits the stop. Make a mark on the damper. Then turn the engine the other way till you come back around and hit the stop again. Make another mark on the damper.
Then carefully measure between the marks and make a new mark exactly in the middle of the first two marks. That will be TDC.
if your ring has slipped then you must replace it
any slippage will eventually become failure
when it fails you will be just a few miles fron
the engine twisting it's guts apart
I have seen a 454 crank twisted in two
in less than 10 miles
