My '04 350 began doing this at 13,000 miles. I've been to the dealer now for the 3rd time, this time with a DVD of the attached video...waiting to see what they will do. I would be interested to know from other 6 liter owners if anyone has had a similar problem, and what was done to solve it. I understand that the EGR valve was re-designed in '05 to '07 and don't seem to have the same issue as the '03 and '04. This is a link to the video on U Tube...it really starts to act up at about the 1 minute mark. Input appreciated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_531IQ9nRw
I'm not a tech but it sounds like you have an overboosting problem, probably stuck vanes. That sounds like the typical "turbo fart" that sometimes occurs with these trucks when you get on them hard and quickly let off the throttle. These turbo's dont have waste gates so I believe the excess boost causes back pressure and the "farting" sound as it escapes. It shouldnt be doing it at all though under steady throttle nor to the extent that yours is doing it on decelleration. I would take it in to your dealer. With 22K and being an '04 you are still under warranty and it definately needs to be addressed.
Wow, I watched the video and thought you were in my truck!... Mine did the same thing when I first got it. It actually did it while I was on the test drive, why I still bought it, I dont know. Anyways, mine was a lot worse, like when you stated "that was a good one" during the video, that is how mine acted everytime I attempted to go up a hill.
It did it really bad about 200 miles after I bought it while pulling a trailer. I actually could not get a up a hill it was that bad. I had to stop, turn the truck off for a minute, then try it again and it seemed fine then. I thought maybe it was something to do with the computer re-learning as the truck sat for about 4-6 months at the dealership before I bought it. Since then I have not had another problem with the turbo farting.
Also, while this was happening I noticed that my engine temp started to rise pretty steadily. Please let us know back as to what you find out. Maybe it was stuck turbo viens in my truck as it did sit that long and just needed to be ran hard. But, maybe I need to look into this problem further before my warrenty runs out.
Also, I noticed that mine puffed out LOTS of BLACK smoke while it was doing this. After reading another post maybe it has something to do with the EGR being stuck or not acting right. Maybe after sitting for awhile mine got sticky. I am not a tech so I dont know how that would affect it, so if I am wrong...dont bite my head off...
I should mention that the video was taken with my camper, about 2600 lbs. in the back. The dealer will have the truck beginning next Tuesday while I'm away for a week. They are telling me that it's probably the turbo/EGR system, and their new diagnostic computer will tell them what's going on. The "service engine" has never gone on. I guess my main consern is that if they "fix" it by replacing the turbo, egr or both...will it just be a matter of time before the same situation happens again. That's why I'm wondering if any '05 to '07 owners have had the same situation.
Yes it does puff black smoke too each time it stumbles while climbing. The '03, '04 EGR is different from the '05+ and can't be fitted with the '05 to '07 re-designed valve.

No. I have never experienced anything like that- Or a hiccup of any type and I tow a very heavy load in mountainous terrain.
i saw a post like this over on ford-trucks and the guy explained the same exact sound. ended up his vanes came apart in his turbo. here is the link Cat=0&Number=3274971&an=0&page=0#Post3274971
Thanks for the link..It was very interesting to read. I am wondering since I have not had the problem since the first few days I had my truck maybe I do not have to worry about it anymore. Or do you guys think that I should bring it in and have them take a look at it anyways? I have about a year left on the warrenty so I would like to get everything worked out fairly soon. Am I better off keeping the current turbo I have and just hoping nothing happens? I have about 65K on her now. Let me know what you think..Thanks...
gpm414,
I had a 2004 with 33000 miles on the truck when my started doing the exact same thing. I had it in the shop several times to have the problem resolved. The Ford dealer replace the turbo, egr valve, egr cooler and reflashed it each time. All this and no luck fixing things. I had a pryrometer installed just after buying the truck and noticed that each time the truck would start doing this the temptures would go way up 1300+ degrees (no change in boost). Also had a lot of grey smoke. The problem got worse as time went on, so I got to the point that I told the dealer that I did not want the truck back. They stepped up to the plate and got Ford involved and I purchased a new 2006. I received retail price for my 04, paid invoice for the 06 and $8000 from Ford. I have had on problems like this with the 2006. Setting at 22000 miles now. Good luck!
Wow Batu....I want to speak for gpm414, but that doesnt make me feel a whole lot better about fixxing my truck. I really cant look at getting a new one right now as I am going to start building a house fairly soon and trying to do it without loans.....hmmm......I sure hope I dont end up with some bad luck. Thanks for sharing though Batu!
My 04 did that 3 times, only while I was towing my 31' 7800lb travel trailer on I10 at 70 mph, made like a poping noise. Bout the time i was going to take it in to the dealer it just stopped and never did it again. Thought maybe I had gotten some bad fuel, like I said it never did it again.
