Also, I noticed that mine puffed out LOTS of BLACK smoke while it was doing this. After reading another post maybe it has something to do with the EGR being stuck or not acting right. Maybe after sitting for awhile mine got sticky. I am not a tech so I dont know how that would affect it, so if I am wrong...dont bite my head off...
Here's some info for you Joms: Coking (carbon) Deposits in Turbo and/or EGR Valve:
Coking deposits are usually a build up of unburned fuel or oil in the exhaust system and related components (valves, turbo, EGR valve). This can be caused by poor fuel quality, overfueling/leaking injectors, idling for excessive periods of time (especially in cold ambient temperatures), low engine operating temperatures, injection timing (calibration) or oil consumption. Unburned fuel usually appears as white smoke, but over time the coking condition can result in excessive black smoke. Coking depositis can plug the EBP sensor tube, foul the EBP sensor, cause the EGR valve to stick open, block the EGR cooler, plug the MAP (boost) sensor hose, or cause the variable turbo vanes to stick open (no power/boost) or closed (excessive backpressure, black smoke, popping noise, bucking). The cause of the coking issue should be identified before replacing parts to prevent reoccurance. If poor fuel is suspected, use Stanadyne Performance or Motorcraft PM-17-A Cetane Boost. TSB 06-4-12, 06-23-16.
I always use Stanadyne or Diesel Kleen additive at every fill-up. I don't always drive my truck for the best mileage, ya gotta get on it and get that boost up to 'work the vanes' and keep 'em clean. I believe a long, hard pull up a grade does the 6.0 alot of good. 32K on mine and no PSD issues.
I'm no tech, but it definately sounds like a turbo overboosting problem to me. I would get it in asap to get it checked before any damage happens to your head bolts or gaskets.
Thanks for the reply, that's what I'm wondering...any other '05 and up owners? Your input is helpful.
I have an 05' and my truck has never done that. I almost didn't know what I was listening for in that video until he says "thats a good one." The 05' turbo sounds crisp hard acceleration, steady climbing and fast deceleration. I have the 4" turbo back exhaust, but even before with the stock exhaust there weren't any issues with backpressure causing noise.
The turbo on my 03 did the same thing a few times over a period of months. But last October while pulling a 30" fifth wheel, it got really bad going over White Pass. Wasn't sure I would make it home. It rattled like yours and would blow out black smoke!
Had degas bottle burping also, so by the time the dealer got done with the truck, the turbo, egr cooler and oil cooler all replaced. have but on over 10k since with out a problem. Pulled 5th wheel to Calif last month with out a problem.
Good luck. Love my truck, especially when pulling!!
My 2004 will do that when the EGR gets gummed up. Anything over quarter throttle and it will "cough" very consistently once every two seconds. I just pull to the side of the road and unplug it. Problem solved until I get back home to take it out and clean it.
Ran every day. Also not a lot of idle time. Would let it idle during cool down until temp would drop below 500 degrees and for 5 or so minutes to warm up in colder weather.
All our 04 and 05 service trucks started doing this before it hit 20,000,miles. All 6 service trucks in all got new turbos under warrenty. The last truck that had this happen could not get over 30m/h and was a steady cloud of smoke with that fluttering.
It sounds like the '04 EGR and in some cases the turbo is at the root of the problem...which seems to be caused by carbon buildup. It will be interesting to see what the tech finds when he gets things apart. My biggest concern is if the turbo and EGR are replaced, what stops the same thing from happening again? Why won't a new turbo and EGR get clogged again? I'm thinking that's why Ford came out with a new EGR in the '05 diesel 6.0 liter and continued through '07.

When I had the turbo replaced on my 03' it showed no signs of coaking and the egr valve was left alone. So carbon build up may be some of the problems but not all.

So what did they say was wrong with the turbo if they replaced it? How was the EGR cooler and oil cooler related to the problem? Since I live on the Columbia River in Southern Washington...what Ford dealer worked on your truck?

The egr cooler related to a prolem I had with the degas bottle burping when pulling hard. They also found the engine oil cooler plugged. The problem was seperate from the turbo. The didn't specifically say what was wrong with turbo but there was a note saying "No coking"
I use Van Cleve Ford in Morton. So fare the have been good to me.
My truck is going into Ford this Friday (04/27/07) for the same problem. I was pulling my fifth wheel for the first time this year this last weekend, and I didnt think I was going to make it.Changed the fuel filter at camp sight and that didnt help.Called Ford this morning and its going in.My truck only has 28k on it,bought it new in 2004 and after it got 5500 miles on it the inj. froze open and hyd. locked the engine. They (Ford) replaced it and the turbo, get this, with a rebuilt engine. Now, 23k miles later and after other trips back to ford for overheating problems, reflashing etc. Its going back in. I have never been dissatisfied with a product in my life. Ford needs to get off of there high horse a realize that they are losing customers. I thought I would be keeping this truck for a good long time.GMC is looking better and ever, especially with the new ugly freaky new Fords. Wont buy one just because of the looks and the problems Ford is having with their supplier for thier engines. Hey lets all get a lawyer and..........
