I have a 64 with a 223. Anyone switch from points to the non-point system? Does it increase power? Also I may have a bad vacume advance, does this matter if I switch to a non-point set-up?
Websites with the product would be helpful if you have them. Thanks
All my Fords have the Pertronix system in them. Advantages are no more screwing around with points and dwell. Seems to be easier to fire up the cars. Increase power I would say no to. All you are really doing with the Pertronix I is introducing greater reliability into your ignition system. The Pertronix II does have a different module which does more assessment of your spark than the original Pertronix. To take advantage of it you need to use a higher output coil and wire the Pertronix to a full 12 volts off the ignition switch, bypassing the standard ignition resistor wire. That you can leave to the coil as though nothing changed except the extra wire now going straight to the red wire from the Pertronix II. Some say this system increases power but it is all relative. At least you get a more efficient spark. Both systems drop right into your existing distributor if it is in good enough shape to use.
As for your vacuum advance it would be a very good idea to maintain it in a functioning state. Your engine will run much better and be more fuel efficient at cruising speeds with it working and adjusted correctly.
Admittedly I am not familiar w/ the 223, but you can easily swap the "guts" from any V8 Duraspark distributor into a points V8 distributor. Whether that same trick holds true for you 223, I dunno, but I'd think so. You'd need to find a 6-banger Duraspark dist. and take a gander.
hey felow 223 owner. i will probably get in trouble for this but ther is a website specifically for the ford 6 cylinders. the name of it is fordsix.com lots of info. and as far as your question. if you have a 64 or newer 223, you can take a duraspark dizzy from a 240 or 300 6 cylinder, hone out your 223 gear to fit the 240/300 and swap the gears on the distributor and the 240/300 dizzy drops right in. the reason i say 64 or newer is because of the oil pump drive shaft. 64 and later used a 5/16" oil pump shaft. the pre-64 223 had a 1/4" if I understand correctly. now, there is also good news. you can take a 64 and newer oil pimp with the 5/16" shaft and swap it for the 1/4". then you have the right shaft. and prolly better oil pressure(cause of the new pump). hope this helps. If the website got blocked. drop me a pm. i'll get ya taken care off.
Is there anything wrong with the Pertronix that would benefit going through the trouble of installing Duraspark or later dizzies? I installed the Pertronix II in about 5 minutes and haven't had a problem at all. I would say it definitely runs better at all RPMs and speeds. It's always started right up instantly, but now it takes just a millisecond of starter engage to pop off. It seems like a good product from a good company. I do keep points and condensor in the glovebox just in case.
Thanks for the info on using a later model distributor. I have two distributors from 64's and both are in decent shape, but I have always looked around for another option. Sounds like the Petronix may be the simplest way for now and I could try to hone out the other distrubtor I have as time permits.
be sure your vacuum advance is working, its critical on a 223, its the only advance you have, theres no centrifical advance in a 223 dist..with out it you'll have a great loss of power and heating and few enconomy problems

I did a little research and went with the Duraspark on both my 66s. About 3 ys ago and I know the Petrox seems to be ok but with all stock parts ez to get if you ever need anything you should be ok. I can still reach in and just bump the starter and the old rascal start up immediately making the ground rumble with the headers barking. Only 2 wires to splice in. I have no problems with the system.
My 2 cents.
Old Trapper
the reason that i suggested the duraspark conversion is it seems to be more reliable and parts availability . thats all. just goin off what I've heard. and the petronix sounds kinda iffy. that's all.
