Comp Cams 270H:
1800-5800 rpm
270/270 adv. dur.
224/224 dur.@ .050"
.500/.500 lift
110* lobe sep. angle

Best with mild converter, headers, 9:1 comp., lower gears, rough idle.

I was gonna suggest the 268H, which is a step down from there, because I have actually used this one and like it for a dd.

1500-5500
268/268 dur.
218/218 dur.@ .050
.456/.456 lift
110* lsa
The stock converter works OK, good midrange power, slightly lower gears, mild-rough idle.
Now, I used it in a 302, 85 Mustang / C4, 3.55? rear gear. It was pretty quick, decent mileage, and had a nice sound, if that matters.

I deal with a local speed shop, but Jeg's, Summit, etc. sell them. I gave $112.99 for the cam, and $142 for the matching springs, retainers and locks. I think I paid a couple dollars more thru the speed shop, but I prefer to support the local businesses, and this is a great bunch of knowledgeable guys.

Eddy carbs are OK, but I've been using Holleys for quite a while, along with Demon, but it's really a personal preference.

Way too much cam as everyone has said. Also you don't say if this is an early 289 with small slots for the push rods, or a later 289 that used rail rockers. Believe me when I say you can't use rail rockers with that much lift. You will pop out those pressed in studs sooner or later and then need to start over again with tapping the heads and using screw in studs. Been there, done that in 1975 when someone didn't know what they were talking about and I was a novice.

Pete, TBM,

Thanks for the input. Great info. So it sounds like he will be better off with the 268/268. As for the year model, I would assum it is a 1966 or so. I will relate the info to my friend and see what he thinks.

As for the carb question. That was just out of curiosity since many people say holleys are harder to tune than edelbrock but then again everyone will have their own opinion on that one. Thanks.......

So does this setup sound good so far on parts?
268H cam
Performer RPM intake
600 cfm carb
headers
and I guess he will need springs for it too right?
change to electronic ignition (what ever is out there besides pertronix)

Is this the right cam for his purpose or what do you guys recomend. Neither him nor I know much about engines but I told him I had the advantage of the internet and of course FTE to get him some options for his rebuild. I also found the edelbrock dual plane intake for him at summit. Is a 600 edelbrock too much compared to a 550? What other mods would he need? Thanks in advance for any input............
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Well guys it seems like the info I was trying to gather for my friend is not needed anymore. I just got an email from him and he said the mechanic installed the previously mentioned cam and I'm assumming all stock parts. He says it sounds good and runs better. Does anyone know what kind of performance he is actually getting out of that cam in a stock engine and if that is of any benefit for the engine? He is still planing on installing an aluminum intake and 600cfm carb. Also, is he looking at any future problems because of the cam?

He's loosing a decent amount of torque, which is precious in a 289 anyway. I would have gone with the 268 or 270. They would have been perfect for that setup.
