engine timing problem?????????

i just rebuilt my 351w, 30 over, rv cam, carb rebuild, new pistons, valves ground and it seems like it has just barely as much power as it did before. it is also now worse on gas and it coughs and gags when shifting gears. you almost have to feather it up to a higher idle or else it will spit and gag. where should the timing be set for an engine with this kind of upgrade. there is also a noticable smell of gas at the tailpipe when it is running. also with the pedal to the floor it sounds like it is not revving like it should

thanks

Did you put the camshaft and crankshaft at the right timing? because mechanical timing is the most crucial.
What year is it? the 351W's & 302HO have same firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8, I dont kno if Ford changed anything on the Windsor firing order wise but the standard 302 is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. If you use the 1-5-4 firing order which I dont think it will work. Seperate the 7 & 8 plug wires because they are right next to each other and will cause detenation n break your rebuild by arching across the wires if its powerful enough.

The only reason I say try the 302 order is because some people buy 351W cams but get 302 cams seen it, been there, have had it happen here on the forums a few times....good place to start.......

Did you degree the cam on install?

Start at 10*BTDC, vaccum line to distributor disconnected and plugged, warm engine, <800>rpm idle.

no i never degreed the cam when i installed it. i did however make sure that the timing set was dead on the crank and cam.

as far as the strong smell of gas in the exhaust that would mean that the timing is retarded and not completly burning right???

thanks
