Help!! Fullsize tranny in my Ranger

Hi Guy's I also posted this in the Tranny forum. I need you're help.
I bought today a 1988 F150 302 4x4 manual. This truck is a donor vehicle for my 1992 4.0 4x4 manual, that I'm converting to a 302.
My question is, my Ranger has the M50D-R1, and I believe the F150 has the M50D-R2. If in fact I have the M50D-R2 in the F150, will it mate to my Ranger BW1350 transfer case without and adapter????, or am I screwed and have to get another transmission?

Thanx in Advance

Hang in there mate. The 302 swap has been discussed before not long ago. Try a thread search.

Not sure on the fitment issue, but why not just use the F-150's transfer case? You're going to have to get different driveshafts anyways with the swap, so you might as well just use it's case unless something's wrong with it.

Just a thought.

Well I didn't plan on changing the shafts. I wasn't planning on relocating the T-case, and that would eliminate changing shafts. The plan was to fit the tranny to the T-case. then do the engine.

Some insight on the subject from AlanD over @ TRS:
The "R1" is essentially a 7/8-Scale version of the R2.
The only issue is that the shift lever is located all the way at the back
of the top cover on an R1 (Except on Aerostars).
On the '88-96 R2 the shift lever is most of the way forward on the top cover.
Sadly the R2 and R1 top covers are NOT interchangable
HOWEVER.... if you can aquire the TOP COVER assembly only from a '97-up R2 trans that top cover will bolt right onto the earlier R2
and this places the shift lever in very nearly the same position as the shifter position on an R1...

You will also have to switch to an F-150/Bronco Transfer case because the output spline is larger and the T-case mates with a circular six bolt pattern...(personally I recommend the 13-56 T-case from a full size bronco as they use a "fixed flange" rear output instead of a "slip yoke" like the F-150's)

Thanx for the info, well I'm dissapointed. I'll have to do some headscratching for a while. For now I'm leaning heavily towards keeping the M50D-R2, and possibly use the T-case from the F150. Maybe you quys can help me, the truck is 1 hour away and I didn't think to check if the T-case is manual shift or electronic. The Tcase is out of the truck and the shifters aren't bolted to the floor.

So which do you think it is? manual or electronic??? My truck is manual shift and would hate to switch over to electronic... but might have to.

My guess would be it's a manual TC if the F-150 had a manual tranny from the factory.

Your best bet would be to ask this question in the forum dedicated to that particular year F-150. The people who visit that forum would know for sure.

ill be keeping an eye on this thread, as i have pondering doin the same thing to my truck if i dont go 4.0L. though i was thinking about using a t-18 trans. advance adaptors makes a adaptor that allows you to keep the 1350 tcase though modifacations will have be made to the shifter for it. plus also i think the t-18 is cable clutch so something will have to be fabbed up to make it work with the hydrolic system in the ranger. the jury is still out.

I'll post in the right forum, and then post back here so you guys thinking about the swap know about this specific setup.

99.9% sure it would have been manual shift on the t-case on the 88.

I'd say swap the t-case too, then adjust the driveshafts as needed. The stronger t-case is a good investment for your V8 project - no point in putting all that power in the engine and then having the t-case not be able to handle it.

Well if it's manual shift it's more than likely going in there. If it's electric... not sure. Either way I'm pretty sure that M50D-R2 won't adapt to my 1350. I just hope fittment won't be an issue with the more narrow frame of the ranger.
