You doing it with that 98 XL? You can't haul that much anyways, even if it wasn't broken, silly. As you can tell, since it snapped. 1700lbs in the bed, PLUS the trailer, you are slightly over your limits there! You could add air suspension or an add-a-leaf system to bump your payload up, but as I found with my 7000lbs gooseneck, even if the suspension and the axle can handle the weight, watch those tires!

Here is my take on it:

First that is probably too much weight for the truck BUT it is your truck so do what you want. I would fix it one of two ways.

1) I would replace the broken leaf spring and then add one or two more to help handle the weight a bit more. Also add one or two to the other side as well.

or

2) Replace the broken leaf spring and add a set of Timbren's in the back. I just installed a set of these in the rear of my Dad's truck this past week. Seems to help a bit and can easily be installed in under an hour.
They are a bit costly at around $200 for the rear set. But, VERY easy to install. When unloaded it will not affect ride quality. Here's their website: http://timbren.com/

Just a note there is a recall on the rear leaf springs you might get it fixed for free. Check the recall section on this forum.

I'm sure the "well I was hauling 1000lbs more than its rated for" will kinda negate any recall notice.

Well, you tend to break springs....

You said 1700 plus a trailer... add on 10% of the trailer's weight too. If that's a 5000lbs trailer, you had 2300lbs on those leaf springs, well over their capacity.
