I have a 1990 bronco with a 351W and the automatic transmission. I would like to have more power than the stock motor, I believe that the stock motor puts out about 210 hp, but I think that this is hardly adequate. I am looking for a new engine that pumps out about 300 hp. I don't tow much and it is used for daily driving. I just want more power when I hit the go pedal. I have the stock 31 inch tires and 3:55 gears. What is a good company to order from, and where can I get information from? Thanks in advance!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Feb-02 AT 10:24 PM (EST)]A crate engine is just that, a crate engine.
It's the specs of the particular engine that make the difference.
a 302 is fine,a 400 is okay a 351W is better,390,429,460 is even more powerful.

I understand that a crate engine is composed of new parts and that is what I want. A crate engine that SPECS say it pumps out around 300 HP. I am not sure of good shops in the area, so I would rather spend the extra to have a new motor. I have to put a 351W in my Bronco so it will pass emissions, a 360, 390, 400, 460 is out of the question because those motors were either not offered in 1990 or were not offered in a bronco. My truck is efi and I do not want the headache of converting things, plus I like the reliability. I just want to know if anyone out there has purchased a 351W crate engine, what they think about it, and how to contact those companys
Just make sure before you start your project you do you research and don't end up like me. I too was searching for a little more power and found out after purchasing a 302 HO roller motor that the stock computer system in the Bronco with an E4OD trans will not compensate for these horsepower increases. Your only option is to convert to mass air. Shop around and you will find like I did that it will cost you anywheres from 1000.00-1800.00 to convert your Bronco to mass air. Thats before you start your engine swap.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-02 AT 00:22 AM (EST)]Chris, where do you live? Tothfngclw, why so expensive on finding a EECIV, MAM, and wiring harness? You can get that for cheap if you keep a look out in JYs and mustang sites. Hell, I can probably get all three of those for under $250 if I looked hard enough. I could understand with a Bronco 302 running SD, but you have a mustang engine, right?
Well Then, Your best bet it to head to Edmonton, Alberta
Take a week off, have someone install your pre-ordered engine ,Pay for it with U S money at 160% of the Canadian Dollar
That's $100 US equals $162.00 Canadian
Then drive your Truck back to Anchorage and you've saved yourself $1000.00

If you have to do a MAF conversion, Performance Auto Parts (PAW) has the whole kit. In the 1999 catalog it's around $600, shouldn't be too much more now.
Check the specs for the MAF kits the reason I have been told it is so high is because of the E4OD trans. The AOD trans is an easy and cheap swap because they came in the Mustang. The kits all have a little asterisk that says does not apply to lightning. Thats because the Lighting was a 351 with a E4OD. When you call they will tell you this is the kit you need for the Bronco. I will gladly purchase from anyone out there a kit for a 90 and later Bronco with an E4OD for under 600.00 that includes all components, just tell me where. I have a freshly rebuilt 92 302 HO Roller motor with a B303 cam sitting in my garage about to have the cam changed to go in my Bronco. Injector Technologies will make a wiring harness for 750.00 using your old harness but you still have to buy maf meter and Mustang EEC. If you find one for an E4OD trans cheap let me know please.
I figured the trans. was the variable in your comment. Have you talked to anybody personally whos done this swap with a 5.0 HO, Mustang components, and an E04D trans? Surely, someones done this before. I'd take a MAF conversion distributor's advice with a grain of salt. I'll talk to a buddy of mine who works at a transmission shop (he also races an 8 sec. Mustang, drives a Ford truck, etc.) If the only thing that prevents you in this alteration is the backup lights, safety lockouts, etc., I'm sure there are ways around that.
It's not so much the E4OD that causes the problem, it's just that there are a whole lot more Mustangs that came with the AOD trans so that's who they make the cheaper kits for. The only E4OD kit is for the 1993 Lightning. The earlier EFI Broncos came with the AOD trans so its an easy swap but the 90 and on came with the E4OD. In 95 the california Broncos got MAF and 96 all have it. The cheapest I have found it and I have done a lot of looking was a company called Injection Technologies who said they would make me a harness if I sent them my old one. It would run 750.00 for the harness. Then you need the mass air flow meter, the 2 into 1 intake hose an after market K and N filter housing and filter and a Mustang computer. The harness would allow the truck eec to control the trans and you piggyback the mustang eec off of that to control the motor. It sounds good and would probably run somewhere in the area of 1100-1200 to do it this way but all I was really looking to do was repower my 91. I did not do my research before purchasing the motor and to make matters worse the 5.0 I bought has a B303 cam which even Ford Motorsport says manual trans only. Let the buyer beware......My solution is to swap the cam for a crane hydraulic roller cam 364211 use the truck intake and injectors I have to change the firing order to the HO motor firing order and A/C to the Crane tech its a great step up from stock and a step down from the Mustang......I hope this helps
