Well, all said and done I put in the Mobile1 ATF fluid. Dropped the pan, changed the filter, drained the TC. The transmission has never felt better. I've put about 450 miles on it so far and everything is still ok. The only thing is, it seems the newer bottles say MerconV and the older ones just Mercon, same part number and everything.
question guys...how long does it take to drain the TC? i'm goin for dropping the pan, replacing the filter, even thou it may not look dirty, i've heard too many bad stories abut the flush. not taking any chances. Almost went for that Pennzoil MUTI vehicle stuff, (Quicklube flush) thats supposed to be compatible with no telling how many other kinds, but was a bit leary of this. Also, has anyone tried using compressed air to get most of the oil out of the lines/cooler when disconnected? I believe in geting all the old out. BTW, this is a 2003 4.6 w/54k miles. No trailer towing or other hard working. I'm firm beliver in changing at 50k, but i live in small town, and oriellys is the only one who has the castrol V. Where do you get Motorcraft V? Thats another reason i like to get it all out, cause i dont like mixing oil brands. (this is first oil change) Maybe i.m a fanactic,,,but tranny's cost too much these days to replace. Esp. when its shifting so nice. No problems, just oil getting a lttle dark red. thanks guys!! paul
mercon v fluid now replaces all other transmission fluid- so says FORD. also, its not
necessary to put loctite on the toque converter drain plug, its a tapered pipe thread and will seal if properly tightened. the socket size is 11mm to remove the plug
i don't think that they have published this externally- we recieved notification at the dealership that merc v replaces, and is compatible with all other transmission flluids- merc 3 and type f.
the factory pan gasket is reuseable. (unless torn or damaged) Still curious about the time it takes to drain a TC. As I am also going to do a oil change on the wives 2000 g. marquis. Same tranny i think. 4R70W. It should have a plug. thanks...paul
One other issue....why is Mercon V hard to find? all i can find is Castrol brand, (which i'm sure is good quality) , has anyone bought Ford oil from dealer? may sound crazy,,,, paul ......
Im flushing with old fashioned Mercon. $5.50 for 4 quarts at walmart. '97 4.6 truck has gone 140k miles with Mercon (regular flter and fluid changes every 30k miles) so why would I want to pay 2-3x the price for Mercon V? The bottle says specifically to not use on Trannys specifying Mercon V. I dont believe that Mercon V is backwards compatible, but Im sure there are some on the board that are more educated about this than myself.
