I need to change the transmission fluid in my truck it's a 99 4x4 4.6l with the 4r70w transmision. i was just wondering how many quarts does it take to fill it back up if i just drop the pan instead of flushing it?
the pan holds 5 quarts. change out the filter and clean the magnet when you are there. since your truck is a pre 2001, you have a plug in the bottom of th econverter to drain the other 8 quarts. under the converter housing there is a plastic round cover 3 inches in diameter. take it off, look at the bottom of the converter. rotate it around with a 18 inch screw driver as a pry bar. look for a 1/8 inch pipe plug size plug. (it is actually metric). take the plug out and drain the other 8 quarts. loctite the plug back in. takes about 13 quarts total to refill.
To drain the convertor I think you just need a small socket, 10 metric maybe? I used tranny fluid from the dealer, I thought I might as well use the good stuff.
If it says MERCON V on it, it is the good stuff. You can get it at Auto Zone or Napa or your local auto shop. Normally Wal Mart does not sell the MERCON V, just MErcon.
IMO as long as it is MerconV it doesn't matter the brand, they all have to have the same ingredients for it to be a MerconV compliant fluid. Also buy more than 13qts just to be safe, I'd get at least 15.
Ive heard from time to time though, that some of that mercon v compatible stuff isnt that great, anyone have experience with that? That is why I went with the ford stuff.
i was just out looking. at i took the rubber plug off the torque converter? and there was no fluid in it at all. is there suposed to be a cap inthere and fluid?
rotate the torque converter by using a big screw driver on the flywheel teeth. within 1 revolution you will see a hex plug less than 1/2 inch diameter. as mentioned, i think it is a 10 mm socket. you will get 8 quarts out. you can reuse the plug but it should be sealed back in. you can use loctite 242 or 262 or any similar. i would not use RTV or permatex.
Just to add, I didnt use any sealer on mine and it hasnt leaked at all. I was carefull with it, and I did inspect it to see the condition of it, and I did check to see if it leaked before I went to far with it!
thats right forest. i said ALWAYS use the MERCON V. i should say that statement is for the 4R70W transmission for the guy that started the thread. on older transmissions the oil is straight Mercon. You should always check the dipstick or operators manual for your specific truck.
