96 transmission

I have a 96 f150 with the obd2. And i need to know if that affects the transmision. Can i use a trans from an older f150 with the e4od. Or does it have to be from 96 only

Depends on how old. Ford updated the E4OD in '94 I believe. You just need to make sure the bell housing is for the same motor as yours. There are 3 different ones.

The 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 all use the same trans bolt pattern.

It can be from an older one, but must be an E4OD. Your truck has an EEC-V PCM which was new for 96. I haven't seen all of the harnesses on an EEC-V controlled tranny, but as long as they are the same as your donor, you will be ok.

The solenoid packs changed electrically around 1994 so to be safe he wants to use a '94+ E4OD only.

He will be ok with an older one. The difference is the protection diodes in the solenoid packs that were move into the PCM in 95. If he installed an older tranny he would simply have redundant diodes, no big deal. The problem arises when using an old PCM without the diodes and a 95+ tranny.

That's not the only problem with the older trans. pre-94 connector was different at the solenoid pack. Been there, don't that. Simple fix though... pull the pan and swap out the solenoid packs.
