Nothing wrong with the IRS. Great unloaded ride and with the available air "bags" out back it keeps everything level when towing. We (Excursion owners) have to go to the aftermarket for that.

But wouldnt it be better for towing to have a live axle?

Wouldn't that depend on what you're towing??

Somebody's gonna have to tell Oshkosh and the US Army that IRS isn't good for towing. They did it TWICE (both rear axles) on the MTVR!

since that thing has independent rear suspension, does that mean our excursions can how more ?

I bet you this springs are strong as hell. The U.S army knows what there doing, so that irs is probally engineered to tow.

Anybody agree?
When was the last time Ford geared anything right?

Coming from 2 04 F150s; the 3.73s were adequate in the reg cab 4x2... but the crewcab 4x4 needed 4.10s at the very least, with 4.56s optional...

and you're right, the ex isn't much bigger than my truck was. bout 1000 lbs difference in weight, and just about the same to park it... it is a bit taller though; it is the same exact height as my truck was with a 2.5" leveling kit and 34.5" tires...

as far as towing goes... i haven't pulled anything w/ the X yet, but I can definitely feel another 60 lbs of torque... especially when it's without the drive-by-wire lag...

Maybe you could get a camper, put some carpet in the bed, a bench, a space heater, and call it the mother in law row of seats...

Move the second row door handles back on the door about 8 inches.
Put door pockets for the second row.
Put cupholders in those door pockets.
Make the second row seat movement controls more intuative.
Get the spare tire out of the back.
Widen the third seat accordingly.
Move the third row back that same as the second row.
Smooth/remove/redesign that step that is at the foot of the thrid row passenger's feet.
Allow the third seat to recline.
Make it either a 50/50 seat or a 60/40 seat. Let it be removed whole or as an individual seat.
Give the front buckets longer armrests.
Passenger rear A/C controls should be in the center console.
Trucks w/o center console should have the passenger rear A/C control delete option. (I never use mine). In fact...maybe all truck could have that option. It would make adding video screens easier.
That's about it.
I like all those ideas. I think Ford could sell the Excursion if it made it cost effectivly.
First, don't make a special frame for it. Take the existing SD Crew Cab 156 in WB as the base vehicle, make a mating die from the die for the SD Crew Cab Floor and the Bed floor into a 1 peice floor. Take the SD Crew Cab and mate it to the E-Series rear body. Now add the custom interior peices and you now have a cost effective Excursion.
Granted the taller rear truck frame will place the interior height of the third row seat slightly higher than the original Ex but it would be a very cheap solution.

I'll keep it until it falls apart, Here in Florida it shouldn't rust so I have that going for me. I seldom drive the beast but when I do I really enjoy it. I wash it more than I drive it. Will it be worth something later on down the road? WHo knows but that is not why I got it.

Hell the way I drive it the engine will just get broken in in about 4 years!
