03 explorer sport. 36000 miles. Just wanted to know what could be the problem. it seems when I put my truck in reverse that it feels like its rocking back and fourth. Almost like I am hitting and letting go of the brakes. But it only happens when I turn my car on for the first time. The rest of the day its fine. I was thinking maybe the engine mounts but then it would feel like that all day. Any info is appreciated. thanks
The reverse band may be slipping when it is dry/cold, or solonoid is sticky, or filter is plugged, or fluid is low, or fluid is draining back after sitting.
What happens when you run it through all the gears(R-D-L-R) before you ask it to move?<D<L<R) p move?< to it ask you before min 2 1 for>

nothing happens. its good. once its in reverse and my foot is on the break. It just sits there. Only happens when I let the brake go to start reversing.
UPDATE: Just found out that its not only in reverse but also in drive. I guess in gear at the first start of the day my truck rocks back and fourth. Let me know what you guys think I should do. Thanks.

Navyboy,
I don't have any words of wisdom to solve the problem, but I can let you know that you're not alone on this issue. My 03 SportTrac has been doing the same thing for several months. It happens in both reverse and drive. I have notice, though, that if I leave the defrost engage from the night before, when I put the truck in reverse the next morning and the compressor engages, the truck picks up speed and the chug disappears.
I've also been dealing with a engine sudder when idling at a complete stop for a while now. This led me replace the IAC, but didn't fix the problem. So I feel certain that the IAC is not the culprit for our problem, since mine is new. I'm wondering if we could benefit from cleaning the MAF and/or replacing the air intake gaskets. Maybe someone who is a little more knowledgeable about the MAF and air intake could comment.
yeah mines is new also. I just found out that if I leave the engine running for like 5-8 minutes before taking off that there is no shaking at all. I guess I was just used to driving inports. Didnt have to worry about the engine warming up in my acura. I guess thats the problem. Gotta do some more testing I guess. But thanks for the input.

I don't know about 03's I have a 04, but from what I've read the transmission in the 04's have been problematic.
Mine has the 4.0 sohc v6 43k miles and when I shift from dr to r it clunks like a bad universal joint.
Some cases Ive read about have been worse with a slow engagement of reverse, resulting in a jumping into reverse.
Has the car had its regular service? I have no dip stick to check the trans fluid so I have to follow the service closely.
I'll be surprised if it turns out to be a transmission issue. I still think it has something to do with air flow or fuel delivery. We have had some unseasonable warm weather here in the Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia Tri-State area, which has caused me to run the air conditioner a few times already. There have been a couple of mornings where I have left the AC on from the night before, and when I backed out of the garage the compressor has kicked and the truck backs up smoothly (and faster than normal). When this occurred, my RPMs were about 1000. But when I start the truck when the engine is cold, and without the AC engaged, I get that choppy reverse that Navyboy and I described in the earlier posts and RPMs are at about 650.
Taken in conjunction with that idle shudder I've experienced for about a year now, I am wondering if this is an issue with the intake gaskets, or possible MAF issue. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and take it to the shop.
Yeah id like to narrow the problem before I go to the shop. I would hate to get doped into buying stuff I dont need. I guess I should start doin a little research myself.
