I have noticed that for about the last week I have been getting a funny sounding whine from my engine. It is there when I start it and when I am driving it. I checked power steering and other fluids (same kind of whine that you get when the power steering fluid is low)but it sounds like it is coming from aroung the alternator, any ideas? Also I have been using 4 wheel drive the last couple of days and I was wondering how much it should jump when turning? Seems like it is jumping more this year than others, what could cause more jumping? Thanks for you help!
When the 4x4 is jumping, are you on a surface with resistance such as dry pavement or rocks? If so, that's normal. The engine whine could be your tensioner pulley. Take the belt off and spin each pulley to make sure they are OK.
but it sounds like it is coming from aroung the alternator, any ideas?
The alternator bearings? Isn't the tensioner pulley right in that area, too? It might have bad bearings. If you take the belt off and spin these components, do they spin clean.
Yeah, If you can get it to make the noise while it is stopped, get a clean hose about two feet in length and put one end to your ear and hold the other end around the engine until you pinpoint the noise. Otherwise we are just guessing as there are many things about the 4.0 that can make a whine noise for instance the IAC on the upper intake can whine and a vacuum leak also.
Well I kind of did and I kind of did not. I thought I would just go ahead and unplug the IAC and start it, well I did and it ran much better at a little lower rpm. It had no more nosie coming from the engine so I thought well I will run down and get a new IAC still unpluged. While driving it, it still had a little whine to it at higher rpm. I will put the new one it tommarow and see what happens. But on the bright side when I was looking at the IAC I noticed that my belt really needs to be replaced cracked bad.
Well I have replaced the IAC and put a new belt on, while the old belt was off I spun the pulleys and they seemed to spin ok. The nosie is still there but it is less when at idle because the new IAC lowered the idel a bit. One more question I dont know if this is normal or not but when I first start my explorer it idles high at startup even if it is warm, but when I drive it, it seems to idel right at like the first light that I stop at. The sound still sounds like it is coming from around the alternator, even if the pulley spins ok could it still have nosie in the bearings? Any info would be great. Thanks all.
My 94 as always had the exact same problem. I was always determined that the squealing noise was coming from a pulley, so over the past year I have replaced every pulley (including entire alternator) and the noise is still there. It will go away once the vehicle warms up enough, but I was sure it was coming from the alternator also. So take it from somebody who has put a fair bit of time and money into getting rid of a slightly annoying noise, make sure you know what's wrong before you start replacing everything. (I still have not fixed the noise, and yes the belt and tensioner have been replaced also). If you figure out how to fix this I would love to know.
Well I just made a 250 mile round trip and my check engine light stayed on the whole time. I have never pulled codes on a 93 does anyone have a good link to learn how.
My 03 4.0 makes a little of a whine. It's only noticeable if I have the window down. and even then it's not that noticeable. This is my first vehicle with the 4.0 so i was wondering if it was normal.
