Is it at all possible that an ip is so worn that the pump retards off idle? Any pedal position above idle and the motor gets really quiet. Had the pump cranked up a good bit to give 1250* when working hard. But there was too much black smoke under power and I couldn't stand it. Now with the pump turned down i get alot of blue smoke at idle and right off idle. Replaced the CDR valve with no smoke improvement. Still gets 20 mpg though highway... So the motor about dead or ??
the pyro is right in the right cylinder bank manifold...yea, 1250 is bit high, but I figure that the oil cooler jets on the pistons will keep things a bit under control... Now my max temp is 800* to keep smoke down. The injection pump looks original and the truck has 240,000 on the odo. I looked at the plate and couldn't find any rebuild info, which makes it seem like the ip could be original... With this kind of mileage is putting a new pump and injectors like putting a new basket on an old horse?? Kind of not worth it because the motor could be trash tomorrow??
everything is gray colored on the motor including the ip, which leads me to think it is all original. Could the blue smoke be because of injectors popping at the wrong time from wear? I failed to mention it consumes about a gallon of oil between changes... when the oil is low the motor makes a loud ticking noise on decel...
the smoke is definately blue though. its grey until warm, like any cold diesel but once its warm and at idle the smoke is not heavy blue but blue enough to faintly see it go past the window. It's a grey blue though if you stomp on it from a stop with a load and its faint but disappears once moving of course... Is it possible to have a quick IDI that doesn't smoke?? Quick is relative...by quick i mean... will my 0-60 still hover around 30 seconds empty and will it strain up small hills requiring a downshift?? The air quality laws here are very stringent, not to mention any slight amount of smoke and people get mad...
Hello powerstroke6ltr. My experience has been that blue smoke is usually crank case oil....black is over fueling for the conditions....grey smoke until it gets hot is incomplete combustion......after it get hot is a sign of water.................
My engine was smoking blue last year just like you have described. After I changed the IP and injectors in October the problem went away. (I had tried replacing the CDR - didn't fix anything). I have read on this forum that the IP timing sometimes starts to drift internally when the pump is worn out. I realized that mine was wearing out, so I changed it - what a difference!! Lots more power, and actually sounded more like a diesel.
that sounds exactly like my problem. If you put the throttle to the floor did it get really quiet but the diesel clatter came back the more you let the pedal return??

I don't remember that mine did that, it mustn't have been worn as much as yours. Then again, I could hardly hear the engine at high rpm due to a seized cooling fan. Just fixed the fan last Thursday - WOWEE!! I can hear again. Oh yeah, and it doesn't shake the truck as much at idle either
I replaced the cooling fan a bit ago but it still howls... wondering if that is how it should sound or not... i'll post a video of what the smoke color is...
