White smoke when warmed up

I'm pretty sure I've asked something similar before but now I have better details. My 7.3 fires right up but idles kinda rough when its cold (the motor not the weather). It smokes white all the time, worse when cold but fades when the motor warms up but is still there. It smells like fuel and I gotta feeling its the IP retarding from age (new Bosch injectors were installed about 20k ago). The IP timing marks line up with those on the housing and I was wondering if I could just advance the timing and get a couple thousand miles out of it before I have to pony up for a new pump? How would I do this? Do I warm the truck up and just turn the pump till the white smoke goes away? Thoughts? Thanks guys...

You could jump 12 volts to the timing advance and see if it still smokes. Ive never heard of IP retarding with age just my dad.

I checked for power at all the IP's connections and they all lit up the test light. I thought I read that when IPs age they wear out and the timing loosens up (retards). Sorry to hear about your dad, mines been like that as long as I can recall

Does it start right up when the motor is warm?

Well, today I advanced the IP to see what that would do. I'm sure I advanced the pump all of .060". It doesn't sound too different and by that I mean I don't hear that "rattle", but it idles way smoother and doesn't violently shake the truck around while its warming up. Now it produces white smoke while warming up about as much as it did before warmed up. Putting power to the cold advance doesn't make the rattle either so I can either advance it more or I have a defective advance but the smoke doesn't chage either way. Its still kinda smoking though when it is warmed up. Maybe my new return lines have to "seal up" for a while. At any rate I think I'll leave it where it is for now since it runs a lot smoother than I ever remember.

I would probably say advance it a tad more.

You should only have power on the front drivers side IP connector after the engine temp reaches 112 degrees.

That would be the fuel shut off solenoid.

Rear connector drivers side is cold start timing advance.
Passenger side connector is cold idle speed solenoid.

How do I do this? I already had to use a crescent wrench to turn the pump. How do I make it turn easier? It takes quite the grunt to hold it as far as I did and get it tight again.
