I recently had air intrusion issues. Installed a carrier e-pump and bypassed my fuel selector valve. Since I done this my truck has been sluggish on take-off and black smoking on take-off. Got my ferret out today and timed it. I had to REALLY retard the ip to get it to 7 degrees. It idles great and runs smooth with a light haze of smoke at wot. It doesn't want to start without some cranking though. It started much easier before I timed it but it was a smokey pig. I timed it at 7-7.5 when I replaced my ip and injectors a little over a year ago. Only put around 18,000 miles on it since then. Could the carrier be putting just a little too much fuel pressure on the ip causing timing issues?
As far as I can tell, the most important thing is that the fuel pressure is /consistent/.
Whether your incoming pressure is 0 -- as in gravity fed -- or 8PSI, it should be fine... but it can't be varying if you expect good timing.
Also if it's *too* high, you may overpressure the thing, but I doubt you'll be able to do that with a normal pump.
Either way, though, after changing your fuel system pressures(or anything that could affect the pressures), you want to re-time it.
Thanks guys.I retimed it yesterday and tried it at 8. It's much better but I had to advance it about half of what I moved it the other day. So I'm planning on putting a regulator on it. Which regulator do y'all suggest?
I've been driving it this morning and it starts much better with light smoke at wot. Gonna let it be for awhile and see what happens. My ferret may not have got an accurate reading the first time. I cleaned the injector line again yesterday before I timed it. Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep you posted as to how it goes.
