The D66 is a good turbo from what I hear. It flows more air than stock and spools up nicely but the biggest draw back of it is that it still uses a stock thrust bearing. high boost and unequal drive pressures will still kill it. Bean says its good and anything at stage 2 injectors and smaller. Since blowing my turbo with just AD splits I am leary of stock thrust bearings. I have a feeling that who ever rebuilt the turbo on my turck before I bought it didn't do that great of a job (they used a die grinder to balance the impeller wheel!!!????????) but it still has me concerned about high boost.

My stock impeller wheel looked to be grinded for balance, the replacement had notches cut from it. (click here)

super duty stock wheel???? The stock wheel for the superduties is not a desireable wheel. they all switch the same wheel our trucks came with. The turbo I blew up had the the superduty style wheel in it. Many rebuilders use that wheel rather than the correct wheel for our trucks (cheaper??) it worked fine and I noticed no surge but still when I got the rebuilt turbo I made sure it had the "wicked" wheel in it. it was actually Ron's Banks turbo minus the exhaust housing that I got. Which really is a stock turbo minus the housing.

The surging issues with the superdutys if from the intake housing and not the wheel. The wicked wheel is just a quick and cheaper fix than the ats housing. The stock 00+ wheel flows more air with its 9 full blades than the wicked wheel flows with its 5 full and 5 half blades. Some guys see a decrese in performance with the wicked wheel but it cures most of the surging issues. I guess the surging with the stock wheel is just too much air driven in and the wicked wheel allows some of that air to not be used (i dont know if that makes sense or not). The wicked wheel is less efficient.

I read that thread now and it makes sense but with the different housings between the turbo's I wonder if any of that can even apply to our turbo's? I will say that I have never heard of anybody going with the superduty wheel. It did not surge at all in my other turbo and between the turbo I did not notice any change in boost or spool up. the banks wheel doesn't even make much whistle. I drive a early 99 7.3 plowing snow and driving that thing down the highway will about make you go crazy with the whistle. so I think there is some difference with what turbo that wheel is actually used on as to how affective it is. I say that will no proof but just my simple thoughts on the matter.
The good thing is that it is a cheap part to play around with!

I just bought myself Beans D66 turbo and after hearin TJ dog it, im not sure i want it! lol, Bean told me its a great turbo for our trucks, makes great power, good egt safe numbers, and he said it really compliments the stage 1 and 2 injects. It flows more air than the h2e turb does and price wise it sounds like the best bang for the buck. I hope it sounds as good as Lukes sounds!
