I was just given an 86 bronco with a 302, the engine is shot, there is fuel in the oil along with an over heating problem. I am not sure if what kind of mileage the engine has but the odometer says 267k. The body is in good shape only a little rust on the bottom of the tailgate. and the interior is shot almost everything need to be replaced.
<O</O So here’s the deal I really just want to get it running for the time and I can get a running 302 from the same year for $300 it is in a F150 that was rolled, and my friend worked out a deal for me. Because the engine will be out and on the floor or engine stand is there anything I should replace on it before dropping it back?
<O</O
I would be thankful for an advice that can be given.
Take a long look at your blown engine and note ALL CONNECTIONS...Then be sure that the replacement engine is the same . Im getting ready to swap a 95 altima engine into a 94 and BELIEVE ME YOUR PROJECT IS CHILDS PLAY COMPARED TO MY PROJECT
Yes both engines are the same I already have the bad one out and on the floor. I just want to know if there was anything I should replace as a Preventive measure before dropping it in, because it would be easier to work on it while out of the truck.
Plugs, wires...did the new engine leak oil? If so put in a new rear main seal while its out along with oil pan gasket. Check the valve cover gaskets....do they need replacing? Thermostat? Simple and cheap to replace! Good luck!
Could be a good time to spray everything down too...the new engine and engine bay.
I'd invest in all easy gaskets (get the good ones Not cork) Rear seal Its cheaper now, Check pan for rust while changing gaskets. Install and see if it runs (rolled engines are funny that way) or runs before they yank it. Also what year is motor out of in 94 302 went to 351 order. No biggie but pay attention to plug wires routing if put new on. Good luck If other motor is out and ready it should take you a long week end . Have fun I just did one last week.
yeah you could do all the easy stuff but the first thing I would do is check the timing chain and replace the oil pump while its out jmop been where your at and know what to check for sometimes its just easier to do all the things even if there not a problem now look down the road oil pump replacement while the engine is in is a pain same with timing chain also would do water pump and anything else that looks like it needs to be replaced that might be difficult to do once the engine is back in
Well thanks everyone for the advise, I tell when I start I was like well this is easy to fix when it is out so I replaced a lot of stuff but never got the engine back in this weekend, maybe next weekend.
this is what I have done:
New water pump
New Oil pan
front seal
rear seal
time chain and cover
drain plugs (the old ones were rusted in) put brass one in. the old ones took a will to get out, one of them was all round off.
dip stick
fuel line O rings
If I were you I would do a compression check on all the cylinder just to be safe. If you dont have one you may be able to rent one at Advance or autozone.
