My door tag does not have the axle ratio code on it (nor the tape/pinstripe/lower accent code) so I looked on the differential tag to see what the ratio is.
My tag reads:
S 410 B
73 10 2 0F06
I wondering if the 410 indicates 4.10s or if the 73 indicates 3.73s. Also is there anyway to know if it is Limited Slip or not from the tag?
I know I can calculate the ratio from speed/rpm or by turning the tire over and counting revolutions but I was hoping the diff tag would tell me as well. Thanks.
The 73 in the second line shows you have 3.73s. It is my GUESS that the bolt is covering the rest. If you have a LS unit there will be a letter before the 3.
There is a tag decoder in this forum somehwere. A guy posted what each code stood for. I wish I could remember but it's early here in Hawaii as I type this...
Ken, thanks - I found the thread(s) finally. Needed the "tag" keyword in the search not "code" like I was trying. None of the other ones picked it up or found way too many results:
Looks like it is 3.73. The 410 was just a coincidence...dammit :P I guess i need to rub a little more off the tag to see what's in front (or loosen the bolt) to see if it is LS or not.
Interesting thing is that all the Ex's have 10.5" rears, right? My tag shows "102" and the other poster shows "103" where Ring gear size allegedly is found. Since Ford never made a 10.2 or 10.3 inch rear that I'm aware of and surely not in the same vehicle line, I'm guessing that info is incorrect.
The pic in my gallery is pretty clear that it is "10 2" not "10 5"
Just FYI for anyone else searching.
Housedad, thanks for the illustration. I've been trying to find my axle ratio all day long with no luck. It wasn't on the door tag and I couldn't see an axle tag. When I saw your illustration I dragged myself back out under my new, (to me), X and found it. Of course it was parallel with the cover so I couldn't see it the first time...and it was on the other side of the cover plate...on the wet, snowy, side of the driveway.
It reads 4L30 10 2 OF16. I'm hoping that it means what I think it means and I lucked into a low miles X with a limited slip diff and towing gears!
I love this beast more and more every day I drive it...
Well, I just bought this "new to me" 2000 X v10 and it only had 80k on it. Well the door jam does not have the axle code. So, upon advice found here I crawled under the truck to find the tag. Thanks to all for the help.
I think I have the Limited Slip 4.30 in my X. Can someone confirm please and if it is correct give me that pros and cons. I think I got the better towing gearing and that is what this truck was for. I am pulling my toy hauler, boys and my very understanding wife for some fun trips.
Yup! 4.30's! I see no cons but some may try and tell you that it makes the Excursion an even bigger gas pig. Those folks usually don't know any better.
I guess I got lucky. As far as the gas hog goes, I don't think I bought it for the outstanding fuel economy. I do have a prius for my work commute, so I live on both sides of the fence. Looking forward to hooking it up and going to the grand canyon this month.
