i have a 351w with a mallory unilite distributor this past weekend i was playing around with it in the desert and suddenly it stopped running. well after some time i found the problem. inside the distributor down in the bottom is an advance plate that you can limit the amount of advance in this dis. well one of the stops in the bottom broke off and jammed the dis while running causing it to turn and mess up the timing. my question is has any one heard of this problem and know why it would happen? and is a msd dis a better part? i have also heard that unilites with there optic windows dont like dusty conditions and this can cause the ign to fail.
I had a Mallory Unilite that dropped a small screw out of something (don't remember what). I "E" mailed them and they had me send it in and rebuilt it. The screw had jammed and generated a ton of metal dust. They also rebuilt an older one for me that plain wore out. Both for free.
I obviously like their service but would not use a Unilite again. I had too many problems with them.
I prefer the Mallory myself. Contact them thru Mr.Gasket. They bought them out when Super Shops went out of business (I used to work there). Mallory is very good about taking care of their customers.
One of the problems you'll find is locating a good dizzy that has vacuum advance. You really need it for performance/4 wheel drive. I'm presently using Accel with a 300+ module.
