i have a 351w with a mallory unilite distributor this past weekend i was playing around with it in the desert and suddenly it stopped running. well after some time i found the problem. inside the distributor down in the bottom is an advance plate that you can limit the amount of advance in this dis. well one of the stops in the bottom broke off and jammed the dis while running causing it to turn and mess up the timing. my question is has any one heard of this problem and know why it would happen? and is a msd dis a better part? i have also heard that unilites with there optic windows dont like dusty conditions and this can cause the ign to fail.
They have a phone number to call or you can email them. I personally wouldn't dump a new Dist into it unless the one you have is broken beyond repair. JMO
the only concern is if it is going to break again. the damage it did was minimal this time, if the tab jammed better it could of sheered the dis roll pin, bent the shaft, spun the dis, tearing the wires out of the cap. i would just like to not have an failure if possible. i drive the truck 100s of miles into the desert breaking is not a good thing. thanks for the advice
