I was thinking of replacing my cluster with one that has a tack. What would be involved with the wiring? I have an '82 f100. Not sure what year the cluster is but it is from an f150. It is the same type only with a tach and trip-odometer.
Any chance they used the same wiring harness on all trucks so maybe the connectors are already there?
You can certainly try it, and if it doesn't work you can add the wiring. The more important thing to look for is the guage package. If you do not have gauges, and the other one does, the alternator may not charge since they were wired differently.
I looked it up in the diagrams. The connector for the guages is called "c208". The connector for the tach is called "c208a". So this may mean it's an extra connector for the tach.
The wire colors going to the tach are black/lightgreen and darkgreen/yellow.
The black/lightgreen wire goes out to to the ignition module wiring. It splices into the black/lightgreen that goes to the distributor.
The darkgreen/yellow splices into the darkgreen/yellow also out at the ignition module.
There is a connector on the way to the ignition module called "c-311". It may be that the wires are already spliced into the ignition module wiring, and come out to a plug that is ready for the tach wiring to be plugged in. Write back in if you figure it out and let us know how it worked out.

I also obtained a dash/instrument panel for my 1983 F150 I6 that has a tach and fits 81-86. But the tech working on my truck (rebuild) said I had a 16 pin wiring harness and the dash with the tach had a 19 pin harness and I would have to obtain a 19 pin harness. Does that sound right?
