I have a 1989 Ford chasis E-350 7.5 litre(460) F.I. in my RV. I am having problems with it shutting off and hesitating. It starts fine but when I drive it on a rough road it shuts off and it hesitates while driving sometimes. Diagnostics only showed a rich 02 sensor. After driving for about 30 minutes and it was hot it started backfiring and completly shut off and would not start. After sitting for 30 minutes and it cooled down it started and I got it home but it was still acting the same. I have replaced the fuel filter, throttle position sensor, and the coil pack so far. Could it be the ignition control module mounted on the distributor getting hot and vibrating? If anyone can help or had this problem please let me know, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
That does sound like an ignition module problem. Have you taken it out to have it tested? Most autopart stores have a system to check it out. However by the sounds of it, you may not be able to recreate the problem on the test bench. If you own a hanyes or chilton manual for your truck it will tell you how to perform the ignition module test. That way you can drive it until it starts acting up and find out if it is it for sure.
Have you checked the fuel pressure? My 89 f250 7.5l ran like crap when ever it warmed up and was hard to start when warm. I checked the fuel pressure and the static pressure bled off really fast when I shut it off. Turns out is was a bad fuel pressure regulator. Pulled the vacuum line off and it was bleeding fuel out the top. Replaced that and it has run great since.
Thanks guys for all the help. I did replace the distributor module this past weekend and it is still running the same. Someone else did mention it might be a fuel problem. It's really a strange problem because it will start fine and even after it sits warmed up it will be fine. As soon as I drive it on a rough road next to my house it will shut off but starts back up fine. Then on the road it will hesitate sometimes and then eventually die after it gets hot but will restart after it cools down. Thanks again!!!
HELP! HELP! I am still trying to find my problem. The engine check light flashes on and off when driving on the rough road and when it hesitates but I think that is due to the engine shutting down. I need some more suggestions please. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator? Thanks
Do you know your calibration code? On an Econoline, it's on a decal mounted on the top of the radiator (core) support. There are several possible parts which may be causing the problem. One is an anti-backfire valve. The calibration code is necessary to find parts, as these newer vehicles no longer have applications in the parts books for most of the fuel and ignition related items (a PITA!)
If you don't know what the code is, I need to know the GVW and whether the chassis/engine is from CA. Not sure of CA? Is there a VIN sticker or plate? Look on that for DSO...if the two digit number is either 71 or 72 it's from CA.
When you replaced the ignition module, did you replace the pickup coil in the dizzy? Ford mechanics always replace both.

I will have to check on the calibration code. Where is the anti-backfire valve located? I did not replace the pickup coil when I replaced the ignition module. Is this located inside the distributor? Thanks for the inputs and help and I'll check on the codes.
I checked the code tag and the DSO is 52, GVW E33Y, VIN 1FCKE33G3KH890207. I disconnected the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator valve and no gas was present in the line and with the engine running it did not make any difference. I cannot duplicate my problem with the vehicle sitting still. It starts fine and idles and revs up fine even after it is warmed up.
