Oil Usage

Does anyone check there oil on a normal basis? Say every 1000mi or so? Just checked my oil after changing it 1000mi ago and is is down about 1.5 quarts. I have the 5.4 with only 10k on it. Yeah, I make short trips to work about 10 miles, so I have the milky substance underneath the oil cap, but still 1.5 quarts is a hell of an amount of oil to be consuming. I don't want to start a big thread on this, but if any of you guys are seeing this too, then hell, I'll assume its normal.
Thanks
Rich

Sounds like it wasn't refilled all the way. Maybe forgot to compensate for the new oil filter?

whoever changed the oil might have only put in 6 quarts instead of 7, the 4.6L takes 6 qts (don't start arguing over this) and the 5.4 takes 7...

I checked it about an hour after I let it cool down from the change, and it was dead on 7qts. This happened on the first change also. Who knows why, guess I'll just keep an eye on it.

I had an old 302 that would had a bad dry-start condition when pulling a cold start, but when it was warm, no problem...

I would think an hour is plenty time for the oil to drain back down to the pan for an accurate check.

Take it in - 1 quart in an oil change is A LOT of oil.
Mine was doing that at about 25k miles - the dealer found an O ring leaking around the oil filler and replaced it under warranty. I never did see any oil on the driveway or on the motor, but it was going somewhere.
I do check mine about every 1000 miles, call me paranoid, but my truck works pretty hard. I like to take care of it.

Not filter -- filler -- filler tube on the valve cover.
