I have a 99 Expy EB w/5.4L. It currently uses about a quart every 1000 miles or so, which seems very high to me. I've checked the cylinder head for leaks and it does appear wet, but no apparent drips exist. On those 5.4L's w/o head gasket leaks, what is your normal oil consumption.
Hey guys, sorry but I wanted to bring this back to the top. I'm trying to figure out if my 99 5.4L Expy is experiencing normal oil consumption--its certainly higher than I've seen with other vehicles and just wanted confirmation from some the experts.....it uses about a quart every 1000 miles or so--the right head is slightly wet at the gasket area so I imagine it has the dreaded problem.............any advice would be greatly appreciated.
When my engine was leaking there were no drips and only a slight smell when turned off hot. Oil seems to travel from cyl head down the top of the tranny which made it difficult to find. Now that I have a quasi-new engine with 27K miles on it there is 'zero' oil consumption.

My '99 seems to burn about a QT at 3000 miles.I have about 30500 miles on her.
I use synthetic oil.
May be normal.
I don't see any evidence of the dreaded gasket oil leak anywhere.
I'll check much closer when my Ford Extended Warranty is about to end in 1 3/4 years.
It might be the problem - although look into other possibilities. Is the oil pan gasket leaking? Are the valve cover gaskets leaking? Is the PCV system in order (I believe it was Buzzard who pointed out that oil could get sucked into the intake through the PCV system. The oil would burn during normal combustion, and the cats would take care of the smell/smoke, making oil essentially "vanish")
Keep in mind that once that oil starts leaking and gets hot, it'll go all over the place. Usually the head gasket leak is characterised by the oil falling on the exhaust and stinking up the place.
Either way, keep an eye on it. My oil pan gasket and oil filter both leak, and I have to put in about 1qt every 2K miles. It's fine by me - I use Chevron supreme ($1.08/qt at Walmart) and the leaks just guarantee that I've always got a bit of fresh oil in there
