I am rebuilding the third member in my 9 inch, its my first time and Im not sure how thick of a shim to use. It had 3.00 gear in it I am switching to 3.89 gears with a detroit tru-track.The old gears do not have any markings on them what should I do? I have been reading the third member rebuild section but alittle confused any help would be appriciated.
There's no answer to your question - each carrier and set of gears is different. That's why backlash, pinion depth, and everything else needs to be precisely measured with the right tools. This is also why most people take their gears to a pro to be set up.
ok thanks Ill start a mock up with the one that was origionally in there and go from there by adding or subtracting thickness . I guess this is why they say its time consuming.

When you buy a R&P from Ford or a supplier, it comes with everything needed to set them up. Shims, grease, gasket, even the powder. It's only time consuming to one who hasn't done many. A good shop can set 6 to 8 a day....per mechanic.
I built the engine myself and converted it to a manual transmission and all the wiring. now im doing the third member.
If not I have a friend that knows how to set them up I can ask him for soome help but he is hard to get ahold of.
You need some expensive and special tools to set up a rear end. If you don't know how to do it, you will get it wrong, I promise. A rear end that's not set up right will self-destruct quickly. Your ring & pinion will definitely be destroyed, and there will be collateral damage as well.
If you don't know how to do this, and from the questions you're asking you clearly don't, then either get in touch with your friend or pay someone to do it.
