Hey Guys,
I've got a cracked third member housing and I'm looking at getting it replaced with one from a junk yard.
Will any 9" third member housing work? Or do I need to know my bearing size?
Just call it an 9-inch axle housing.. not a 3rd member which refers to the pumpkin.
No, not any axle housing will work.. spring pads, shock mounts, etc can be different dimensions.. measure/verify perch to perch, OAL, etc...... get a housing out of a Dentside and verify your bearing size to reduce the likelihood of not getting the right one.
Its the actual third member (pumpkin) that is cracked, not my axle housing. I've got a locker in it that I am planning on keeping and putting in a new one.
I guess what I'm wanting to know is will my ring and pinion swap over without any problems into any new empty pumpkin??
No such thing as 35 spline axleshafts in any F100/150 w/a 9 inch. 1957/67 F100: 28 / 1968/72 F100 could be either 28 or 31 (w/a 9 3/8" ring gear) / 1973/83 F100 & 1975/86 F150 could have either 28 or 31.
35 splined axleshafts were used in mid 70's thru 1986 F250 Dana 60 rear axles.
ok, so I've been shopping around for a new carrier and I'm finding some that come in different bearing size/bore diameter. I'm finding some that say they use a 2.89", 3.062", or a 3.25".
I'm planning on taking the gears out of my current cracked carrier and putting them in the replacement. And I can't just pull mine out and measure it.
Am I reading too much into this?
HIO Silver, you say a carrier is a carrier, but when I go to order one I see different options and I'm getting confused.
Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, but I really appreciate your help.
Is it true that the 31 spline axles are the ones with the two "dimples" marked in the center of the outboard end?
Here is a pic of my 1982, which should have 31 spline axles (I haven't pulled it). I however pulled a third member from another 1982 and it was in-fact 31 spline.
best way to know is to pull the axle. you can make a good guess but you won't know for sure until you pull them. And they are pretty easy to pull, its like a 10 min job.

Thats the same as mine. In another thread someone said the same thing today; these are the 31 spine axles, I dont know as Ive never had to pull one on the 3 half tons with 9'' I've owned.
I'm pretty sure my 28 spline axles I pulled out of a used 9" housing I changed over to 31 spline were the same though. apparently I didn't take pics of them from that angle but I did take pics from a few other ones.
