New truck

Hey Guys, My dad has a 2002 superduty and ive put some money and time into it for him. Now its my turn. Im looking at buying a 1997 with the 7.3L. I wanna build it up so its better than his. lol of course. I tryed looking around for some simple mods. I found a air box on ebay. Now im thinking Stacks, 7 inch, i just dont know where to find them for that year? Now what about guages. Anyone know where i can get the A pillar 3 pod. Im not worried about guages or wiring i already did that on the 02. So i got the air box, and exhaust out of the way. Anyone know where i can get a good chip for it. My dad wants the DP Tuner chip. I really like the set up with that chip so anyone know if they make it for the 94-97 model? And of course the basic stock info like peak Boost, What are normal EGT's, Hows the trannys on them? Thanks for your help!

pretty much all the same stuff for these truck as is true for the superduties. intake (napa 6637 or tymar are my recommendation) stacks can be had at pure diesel performance and a number of other vendors. guages the same. DP is a great chip and yes you can get them for these trucks as well. also tony wildman (can't remember the name of his web site) is a great ship guy for these trucks. He knows them very well.

as far as tranmissions they are pretty much the same thing as the 4r100 that are in the superduties. if you want then to last you need to get a big cooler and a shift kit or valve body for them minimum. I recommend the BTS Valve body. Don't have any experience with them but lots of other do and love them.

The biggest limiter on the OBS truck is the injectors. Even with a 100hp chip you will only see gains of 65 to 70 horse unless you get bigger injectors. which as long as you can afford a Full BTS or similair transmission can be done easily with the DIY injector kits. There is alot to be done with these engines, money and time are the biggest limiting factors!

Ok i got a pretty good list made up. I also heard good things about the TS chip, Then the AFE Stage 2 air intake, Trans power kit from Xtreme Diesel Performance, Pod and guages from Diesel manor and a 4 inch exhaust system Turbo back. If anyone thinks that i can get better for my money please speak up! Also how much Hp are these trucks rated at stock? Thanks for you help!

Go to Tony Wildman for a chip. He'll give ya better programs than the generic TS stuff.

I vote Tymar for exhaust downpipe at least. Dale is a huge wealth of knowledge for 7.3 and OBS strokes. Dale also has some pretty good prices to.

well the sticker on my valve cover says 215@3000 rpm, but i think mine made around 160-170 with no cat or muffler and with my superchips programer,3"dp, 4" exh, intercooler it made 205 and 425 @ the wheels.

Thankyou, My buddys future brother in law has a truck for sale. Its a 1996 single cab long box, dark red. He has some work to it. My dad raced him with his truck a 02 and this red one just walked by us. It has a K&N cold air intake, 110 hp chip im thinking its an edge. 3 inch downpipe, and a bunch of new trans parts liek shift forks, clutch, flywheel, he also has new u joints new brakes. I dont know what he means about this one..... a new fuel filter housing and heater?? He also has a new starter and alt, bushwacker pocket flairs (Im not to crazy about them) 38 inch thornbirds and a 3 inch body. Its a michigan truck and the rear quarters where gone, so thats the reason for the flairs. He cut out the rust and used POR-15. I think if i get it il just get new box sides and take the flairs back off and sell them. Along with a couple of things that im not to happy about like the K&N, I want AFE Stage 2, The edge chip, im thinkin about the DP or tonys. And the 3 inch downpipe is only to a straight exhaust and i know this truck blows the smoke so im thinkin stacks. 5 inch. It also needs new tires and wheels. He wants 10 for it. And thats all i got to spend so that means nothing else can be bought for the truck. what do you think its worth. He said its also got 114,000 miles on it. I know the guy and i dont think he would rip me off. Another thing is i cant believe how big this truck is! Hes saying its only a 3 inch body but those 38's are massive. The tires are brand new and there already gone. Il get a radial LOL! Well tell me what you think, i wont be buying it till late march and he doesnt drive it n e more. Im also gonna go look at it and talk to him about payments for the first couple months so i can start drivin it right away.

doesn't sound too bad. might be a little high in my mind for a rusted truck. also look at the turbo close for signs of dirt entering thru that k+n. Hope you find just the right truck for jsut the right price!! keep us posted!

King, I'm with tjbeggs on this one. Seems like a little high for a rusted truck. Don't forget that if the quarters were rusted that's not all that's gonna be rusted. I live in upstate NY and with all our freakin snow, I know about rust! I don't know your situation, but take your time if possible and wait for that (special) truck to come up for sale. It took me several months before I bought mine.GOOD LUCK!

Thanks, I just learned that the truck has been into napa and he tryed to get helicoils for it. I guess when he gets in the bumps the Transfer case bolts that go to the tranny rattle loose. And otpracer, i had a 79 bronco that the quarters were gone, so i bought brand new ones and put those on. If i did get that truck i would do the same, new box sides. but yet i know that once they start rusting its pretty much impossible to stop. Im sure in april i will find something. My spring break starts on April 6th, so il find one and go get it durring that time. Thanks guys
