I was pulling a trailer and noticed what sounds like an exhaust leak. Sounds like it is coming from the left side of the motor. I really notice it when the rpm's are more constant at highway speed. Are these powerstrokes common for exhaust leaks. Thanks Again, Tony
Are ya talking like a exhaust tick?? If thats the case yes it happens. Check the exhaust manifolds for broken bolts and soot marks. Also check out the turbo...mainly the exhaust side for loose/missing bolts.
what are the up pipes? do they come up from the manifolds to the y on the turbo? and how in the world would a guy check the manifolds, there just doesnt seem to enough room? Thanks Tony
I would say no. I've had a leak from my downpipe ever since I've put it on. No worries. Just kinda annoying sometimes.
Yup, the "up" pipes are off of the manifolds that go to the turbo. In my opinion the best way to get a look at those manifolds is to use a flashlight and get underneath the engine.
I have the same problem. Don't have the time or the $$ to fix right now. I have run 10,000m on it without a problem. The cause of mine is a broken manifold bolt in the back. I talked to a guy about fixing it and he said he has seen it before on these 7.3's.
Since this is my first diesel ever I really dont want to jump to a worst case senario but the sound I am hearing sounds like an exhaust leak. Then as the rpms increase that sound is replaced with a sound that almost sounds like a knock. I really do not want it to be that, PLEASE GOD! I looked at the exhaust manifolds as good as I could, I did not see any bolts missing or holes. When it is idling or reaved up it sounds great. It is only when driving and the rpms reach around 1800. Any insight?
I have gotten so used to the sound that I barely notice it at all any more (not nessacarilly a good thing). There are noticable carbon deposits on the lower firewall. The tick gets much louder under load and I guess the sound could vary based on where your leak is.
