Christainman316 I've only done the job once and on my truck while the transmission was out. It was very easily done that way. I think to do it without pulling the transmission you would have to remove the downpipe to get some room to get in there on the starboard side.
Port side is very easy no matter what.
I didn't notice any difference in power at all, before or after, but mine weren't leaking that bad. Just enough to turn everything black. I never smelled exhaust.
Do you have the same rear end gearing on the two trucks? That would make a big difference in accelloration.
Yeah both are 3.73 limited slip--03 is a crew cab, 01 is a supercab! Not a real noticeable power loss--but small nonetheless.
That ticking exhaust leak noise is driving me nutty though!
So are you guys telling me that if I have a leak on the drivers side at the flange, that I have to replace the uppipe?
It's best to do that.
When I removed my old ones there was a very heavy wear pattern at the end of the pipe where the gasket made contact with the pipe and wore the metal away. You most likely could get away with putting in some new gaskets under the collar and it would work for a while.
But IMO it will be a more lasting repair if you replace the pipes altogether so you get a nice new sealing surface for the gaskets work with.
I just reset my old up-pipes with some new donut gaskets, I'll see if it fixes my leaks or not. I also applied a layer of fiberglass header wrap and spray on silicon coating, made things noticeably quieter inside the cab.

Kwik-I have not noticed anything black under the truck, I looked around that uppipe and from what I can see, there is nothing black there.
Like I said, there is a noticeable exhaust leak noise inside the truck--when accelerating and higher rpms. Also there is some exhaust smell in the cab early on cold days, and when you are standing outside the truck while running.
Is there anything else to look at before I buy a new uppipe and have it installed?
Yeah, find the leak. If it ain't broke don't fix it. It could even be the downpipe connection. Very simple but find it first before fixing. Should see some black residue wherever a leak is. CCV mod done yet?
CCV mod?? Not sure what you are talking about! I have not done anything to the truck since I purchased it, aside from putting new Bilstein shocks on it.
Where is the most prominent places to look for leaks, I have checked around the exhaust manifolds and have found nothing, is there a place on the uppipe that is not visible where a leak could form? Thanks for your help!

CCV Mod is where you vent the crank case out through the exhaust, to the rear through a long heater-type hose, or install a filter to catch the oil instead of sending through the turbo, intercooler, and CAC tubes. Do a search -- plenty of info on it...
