hard starting
For the last few days My truck has been a bear to start. I plugged it in last night for 5 hours (on a timer) and it started this am but very rough. White smoke did come out after it got going and sounded like it one not firing on one cylinder after it get going then it sounds normal as it should. I am taking it to a local diesel repair shop friday. I will ask them to check the relay and the glow plugs. I also want them to use ford parts to ensure proper fitment. But i suspect this is a relay, but i cant relay check it out without a multimeter. ( i dont have one, maybe it will be a wise investment) anyway I also get the romp romp on cold mornings too. I use 15-40 w oil maybe i should change to synth. any ideas ? Jeff

Also make sure you check your batteries while you are at it. I just replaced my batteries and glow plug relay due to hard and no starts. Watch out for the shop wanting to change out the glow plugs since these don't usually go bad. Just my two cents.

If you get an ohm meter (get a digital readout), you can check your glow plugs by unconnecting the 9 pin connectors at both of the valve covers (near top edge) and use the following info:
GGIICIIGG
G - Glow Plug
I - Injector +
C - Injector -
Ohms between the G and block Ground should be 0.1 - 2.0 ohms.
Ohms between the I and C one at a time if one or more is > 5 ohms, it will point to the side's gasket connector or UVC harness being shorted.
You can get a ohm meter for less than $20.. good investment..
This info is also great for checking if your have a loose "under the valve cover" 9 pin connector that is loose. Both of mine were loose.. the locking tabs are junk..
