I hunted down the red/pink wire, which is the wire that goes to the chime module. What year is your Ranger? I just cut that wire at first, then later I decided I wanted the chime to be switchable along with the interior lights...so I tracked down the wires for the switches that turn the lights on when the door is open, after a little bit of wire running I hooked them to a small cheapo metal switch under the dash.
That way, the chime and lights still function as normal (keys in ignition with door open, lights on with key out of ignition, lights come on when door opened, etc.) but when the switch is flipped the truck basically assumes the doors are closed and thus leaves everything off.
Next task for me: make the cargo light not be linked to the interior light.

my truck is a 99 ford ranger.. red/pink wire? which colored wire did you cut? and where is it located?
Ok... keep in mind there are 5 years difference in our trucks, and at least one body-redesign, so the wires may have moved.
I found the chime module and the wire to it under the center of my truck's dash...sorta behind the radio, against the firewall. Positively the most inconvenient location it could possibly have been in. I put off cutting it 'til I had the dash apart. Then one snip, and the chime was completely gone.
I locked my keys in my truck one night (in the garage...so it didn't matter since I had a spare), I decided I wanted the chime back...but to be able to disable it.
I ended up pulling a lot of stuff out to get to the switches that control the lights and chime when the doors are open. I ran them together and put a switch in the wire under the dash.
I'll have to get the wire colors for you, and some pictures. I'll do it next time I'm under there...which knowing me will be fairly soon with all this work I'm doing.
You think it would look good? I mean would it go real well with the stripes? I always picture roll bars as off-road items...though chrome would be a nice one I guess.
I think it would go good with the truck, and the stripes, because you have those chrome bars on your bed, and the grill n' stuff is chrome. it wouls acutally look quite sharp. i dont think it would work with black. also watch the type of lights you get. if you get the big huge ones, then it'll just be an off road light mount, but if you put like 5 little ford oval sized ones up there, you'ld be having an even sharper looking truck.
I rather lose the chime all together but being able to control it also is good.. explain both if you could..
The way Zak did it on his '94 won't work on your '99.
I recently installed a pushbutton switch that silences the warning chime on my '99 when the driver's door is open (the passenger door does not engage the warning chime on my '98).
(The seat is all the way back so you can see the button pretty good in the pic, but when the seat is in the normal positon it's hidden quite well).
The "door chime mod" has the following features:
- Pressing the pushbutton silences the annoying chime when the key is in ACC mode and the driver door open. It also shuts off the interior lights (unless they are on for a reason other than a door being open).
- With the engine running and the driver door open, hitting the button shuts off the interior lights and also turns off the "door ajar" light on the instrument panel:
- If the pushbutton is not operated, the chime works exactly as it did from the factory;
- Chime operation reverts back to factory whenever the ignition switch is moved from ACC or the driver door is closed. This "automatic re-enable" reduces the risk of locking the keys in the truck;
- Headlight warning chime is not affected by this mod.
As far as I know, it works the same on a '99 as it does on my '98.
I can't post the link to the mod here, it's from another Ranger forum (which means it'll get nixed). PM or email me if you're interested, and I'll get it over to you.
