I just bought a 2000 ford explorer with the mach cd/cass/rds radio. Does this unit have a factory amp? If so where is it in the vehicle? The reason for asking is radio/cd has no bass even with it turned all the way up. Very tinty sounding. Is this what factory system sounds like? Is there a way to test if amp is good? Thanks
There is a seperate amp for the subwoofer, but I think the main speakers get power from the head unit (not certain though). Check under the driver's seat for the amp, that's where it was on my '98. Not much difference in expys until '02.
It shouldn't sound tinny, the bass is great for a factory system when listening to a CD or hip-hop radio station. If you don't have decent multimeter to test the amp output, find an old speaker (auto, not home audio, different impedence) and try to make a connection at the input of the subwoofer. On the '98 the sub was behind a removeable panel on the passenger side rear cargo area.
You will also probably soon learn that there's a major problem with the display power supply circuit board. There's a fragile solder joint that often fails, causing the time and station display to go out intermittantly, or permanently. Do a google on Ford Mach Stereo Display and you'll get tons of hits. Basically it's a known defect that Ford chooses to deny and/or ignore.
Thanks for the information about the amp. I will check the places you mentioned. There must be something wrong then either with the head unit or the amp because no bass at all.
Yes actually talking about the LCD screen ; this unit had to be fixed by the dealer I bought it from. Luckily I caught it before I signed on the dotted line so they paid to fix it. Next time I won't be so lucky.
