Strange Shock Question

There's been a dozen shock Q&A subjects. But here's my question.....

I can be riding down the road and hit a manhole cover that's an inch lower than the asphalt. The jolt is so severe it feels like I have run over a 2 x 6 piece of lumber in the roadway. It's absolutely nerve wrenching and annoying at anything above 30 to 35 mph.

I want a shock that is going to give me a much smoother ride, and perhaps improved handling and performance at the same time. What route do I want to go as far as manufacturer?

Do you know what shocks you have on now? Some are known for extra stiffness (e.g. Rancho RSX9000) and shouldn't be used.

VaSheriff, i dont have bilsteins but everyone that has them says they ride alot smoother then the stock shocks. I would like to get these but i don't know if they make them for trucks with lift kits? Hope this helps.

Most likely if it a stock shock, its not working. Shocks are gas charged or hydraulic. If the seal goes it no longer works the way it should. My old shocks would have pressure going down, but they did not rebound. 1 out 4 were totally shot. We have been dicussing brands in this thread.

HYbrid, yes they do make shocks for lifted trucks, a few pennies more but they are available, i found them i think might have been the eshock site might have been elsewhere? they have a different part number and are chrome in colour so that should be worth 5 more HP /shock as well.

just from experience, I would say your shocks need to be replaced.

What are your tire pressures? Try the comfort pressure (35 front, 45 rear) to start. Weigh your axles and use the tire pressure chart to fine tune the pressures. The harshness you describe is not typical symptom of a worn out shock, although I had a shock freeze on a Miata that I unstuck hitting bridge expansion joints at 80 MPH on I-65! With a frozen shock, I had no suspension travel. The typical symptom of a worn out shock is "wallaring" or bouncing, which is the opposite of what you are describing. My load range E tires with 80 PSI and no load ride like what you describe.

could the springs be getting wore out? i know when i got mine the springs were almost flat and would bottomout on the bump stops on just a crack in the road, after i had the springs replaced and then put the bilsteins on it now glides on air up front but the back is still rough and needs a little tweak.

I have Bilsteins on my X with a 6 inch lift and the truck rides like a caddy.

I still have the OEM shocks at 42,000 miles. I do not know my tire pressures, although the tires are brand new and visually appear to be inflated to the proper pressure. I am still watching and reading the replies. I am leaning towards Bilsteins at this point.
