OK im new to this forum a buddy of mine just purchased a 199 f250 powerstroke 7.3l diesel. he has been having a problem with it. latly it wont start sometimes. we has to bleed off the fuel alot to get it to fire up. we did it about 20 times. then finally it fired. the other day it wouldnt start yet again. we bled it off 30+ times. an it will not fire at all! whats wrong? what could be wrong? what can we do? please help
the motor has 159k. the oil change mileage is bout 1000 id say. or more. whats the hpop? im not familier with diesels. this is my first one dealing with. the voltage is semi low at crank. this problem happend when he went an pourchas it. the guy bled the fuel off. put 2 new batterys. an it fired up..
The crancking voltage must be greater than 10.5vdc.
The HPOP is the silver reservoir under the "Powerstrok" cover. The injectors are driven by high pressure oil (~3000psi). there is an allen head screw cap to the right side (Looking at it) it shoul dbe ~3/4" from the top.
Air in fuel is a notorious problem the connection between the tank and pump and the mixing chamber (when under ~1/4 tank) can be sources.
to check the fuel pump open the drain valve and let it drain. leave it open and turn the key to "On". there shoul dbe a strong stream of diesel coming out of the drain tube.
ok i will check all that. whats most common on these trucks to go out that would have the not starting effect? what is the glow plug? where is it? an how cani tell if its bad? and how do i check the HPOP?
Take the plug out of the reservoir and confirm the level (thats enuf for now)
The Glow plug relay is next to the fuel filter housing closest to the windshield. Check voltage between both large post and Batt ground. With key off 1 should be energized key on both should be energized.
As far as the plugs there i one for each cylinder you can check ohms through the wireharness at the valve cover (kinda under the intake Y) heres the pinnout
G G I I C I I G G
G=Glow Plug +
I=Injector +
C=Injector -
Ohm between "G" and block ground should be between 0.1 and 2.0 ohms.
damn that sounds like a challenge. im not familier with diesel at all. i know my gas motors. but im new to diesel. in you opinion whats the problem and what would you check first?
They warm the cylinders so the truck starts easier. They come on at key on and depending on oil temp and a couple of other factors can stay on up to 2 minutes.
how fast do they warm them cylinders? an to what temp? if the module was faulty would this cause it to not fire? also i forgot to mention before this problem started. the SES light came on
They will warm them pretty fast there alot of current going tp them, not real sure what temp though.
Code could be alot of things One that comes to mind is the CPS (Cam Position Sensor). its on the front of the block next to the crank at about the 11 o'clock position it it is bad the truck will crank and crank but never fire. Sometimes it will set a code but you will need to get them read to be sure. A shade tree test that only sometimes works is to watch the tach while cranking, on a 99 it should come up to around 100rpm if it doesnt move its the CPS.
damn thanks. il have to get that code read before i do anything. would the ses light come on with a faulty glow plug relay or module ? iv heard the 7.3s have had problems with cam sensors. but im not familier with them at all.
