They will warm them pretty fast there alot of current going tp them, not real sure what temp though.
Code could be alot of things One that comes to mind is the CPS (Cam Position Sensor). its on the front of the block next to the crank at about the 11 o'clock position it it is bad the truck will crank and crank but never fire. Sometimes it will set a code but you will need to get them read to be sure. A shade tree test that only sometimes works is to watch the tach while cranking, on a 99 it should come up to around 100rpm if it doesnt move its the CPS.
When I was checking my CPS, someone said that if the CPS is bad, the tack needle won't move at all while cranking. Not sure if that is true or not though. The CPS is easy as heck to change though.. there are procedures on this board, and your friend should carry a spare one and the a 1/4 socket wrench, 3" extension and a 10mm socket in truck with him. I changed mine, bt that was not my problem. I figured it was an easy part to swap, and I wanted to have a spare anyway so I went ahead and changed it. You can get them on ebay for about $50 or fro IH for around $100. Ford requires that you drop your pants and.. well use you imagination.. anyway they are expensive at Ford. From what I hear if the CPS goes out, the truck just stops wherever you happen to be.. soetimes with exciting results as well.
I know you mentioned draining the fuel off, but did you ever replace the FILTER?
That should be the first step, I would think. sounds a bit to me like the filter has gotten water.
ah ok . will it throw SES light if the cps is bad?? i havnt checked the filter yet but i will try that. i just dont know where to start. i dont wanna go replacing stuff that isnt even the issue
The Fuel filter is an automatic need-to-do on a newly purchased truck,
Moreso if the truck has been sitting for an extended period
even MORE if it sat low on fuel.
Speaking of which, the truck DOES read over a quarter tank, right? If not it may actually be out of fuel. add 5 or more gallons and cycle the fuel like you did before.
im in selma california. grape capitold of the world! lol. that would be nice. this thing is giving us somewhat of a migrane if you will. i dont even own a diesel yet.. an im now nervous to get a ford..
OK im new to this forum a buddy of mine just purchased a 199 f250 powerstroke 7.3l diesel. he has been having a problem with it. latly it wont start sometimes. we has to bleed off the fuel alot to get it to fire up. we did it about 20 times. then finally it fired. the other day it wouldnt start yet again. we bled it off 30+ times. an it will not fire at all! whats wrong? what could be wrong? what can we do? please help
I am really suspecting a fuel supply problem here. Describe your fuel bleed process in as much detail as you can.
The next time you go to start the truck, pull the filter cap off and make sure it is full or at least halfway. If low, pour fresh clean diesel in to fill it then cap it and try to start. If it will not start, and if it is a fuel supply problem, your filter is clogged, a line is clogged, the pump is not working properly, or your HPOP reservior is draining back through the check valve.
well what i do is, turn the ignition on. prime it. once i hear the fuel stop. i crank it. and nothing. it just cranks an cranks an cranks an cranks.no smoke what so ever. i cant really smell any fuel at the tail pipe at all. where is the fuel filter located? does it look lke a reg filter off a gas engine? how can i test my hpop? so after i crank. i go under the 7.3l engine cover. an bleed it off with that valve. thats what i was told to do buy a local mechanic. i bleed it off till it stops. then try to fire again. an nothing..

I doubt you will smell fuel all the way back there in the exhaust. Doing what you have been doing may have been introducing air into the lines going from the filter bowl to the injectors and hence I believe you have a bad air problem.
The filter is located in the large cylinder under the plastic engine cover. It is what the drain valve is attached to. Remove the 7.3 cover and unscrew the filter lid. Need a strap wrench or carefully with large channeloks. Check what I described.
When you go to do this, have clean fuel (about 1 qt is fine) and a filter on hand. Drain the bowl, remove filter, clean out bowl, install new filter, pour in clean fuel, wait a few minutes to ensure it settles and top up to about an inch from top, replace cap. Start the truck.
If your pump is working and the HPOP is fine, (we'll take care of that if needed) it should start within a short time. It will be rough if it has air in it so keep it running. If it starts, even though it may be rough at first, drive it for 20 minutes or so to get the air out.
