yea i drove it around an got it nice n warm. it fired right up after it was warm/ didnt have to give it any throttle at all. where is that switch located? how can i test it? also would a dirty fuel filter cause this? its wierd.. it only fires on full throttle. someone here local said something about the throttle position sensor

The IVS is part of the throttle pedal assembly along with the throttle position sensor IIRC. Unfortunately, I don't think it cares whether the engine is hot or cold so I would pretty much rule that out.
A dirty filter can cause serious starting problems, though the giving it throttle thing has me puzzled. Again, change the filter and make sure it has fuel pressure. Then check the HPO reservior level. I would think your prblem is one of those. If you don't change the filter, you have not eliminated one of the first fuel system problem areas and are stabbing around.
Perhaps the added throttle is causing it to apply more oil pressure to the injectors bringing the weaker fuel pressure up to enough to start.
Of course it "could" be. But why would it care to work properly after the truck has been warmed up? That is what puzzles me. It is not wired such that it looks at the oil temp as far as I know.
I will be working tonight so I have to get ready here soon. Perhaps amiller can check the pinpoints for the TP assembly for any link to cold starts or temp related issues when he gets on. If not, I will look for it tomorrow.
What are the results from any of the test ??
Being a Cali Truck the Code could be a GP Circuit or you may not have fuel pressure or you may not have oil pressure or it could be weak batteries.
I have not seen the TPS/IVS referenced in any of the Hard/No Start pinpoints
I don't think a throttle assembly problem will prevent the engine from starting. But it will just sit there and idle with the check engine light on.
I think that's what it would do. I would have to go home, unplug my throttle assembly and try it out to verify. Maybe someone else with thier truck nearby could do the same and get back to us?
oil level is up. the tach moves when cranking. its getting over 10.5 volts at crank not sure how to test the glow plugs or the pressure. im going to change that fuel filter tomarrow hopefully if i can get a chance. i didnt check the hpop. i got frustrated with the truck an left an came back here. i will go back out in the morning when its light out. it confuses me as to why itl only start with full throttle. an why when its warm it will fire right up with no throttle. could the pump be going out?
Yes, the pump could be going out. Change the filter, check the HPOP oil level while you are there(first thing before starting it), then see what happens.
Also: AGAIN what are your outside temps?
Does it smoke when it first starts and if so what kind?
How did it run? Did it get better as you drove it?
I know you will probably go right back out there and try to start it first thing but I advise against this until you check the aforementioned.
it only does this sometimes witch is odd..itl start up an run good for a couple days to a week. an then do it again. outside temps have been mid 20's at night an now are in the 60;s durin the day. no smoke. it ran great when it fired.
This is probably going to take a trip to a capable scan tool to isolate if it is not what tenn has suggested or glow plugs. Alot of sensors and factors have to come together in a very short time to crank a diesel like these, intermittant issues are very difficult to find.
Use 30*F as a break point and see if it has more trouble colder that that.
alright. it ran fine today.. i just dont get it.. its frustrating an if its electrical.. wel im not very good with it. im good at motors.. im good with tools. but electrical isnt my thing
