computer DVD burner question.

i downloaded a file off of a DVD lent to me on my computer.
then i went to burn it on a blank DVD so i had a permanent copy. the burner says the file is 8.2 gig,but the DVD was only 4.7 gig.
what gives??? and is there any way to compress it or something so i can burn it??

make a copy of the dvd lent to you, or if you have dual layer dvd burner you can get 8.5GB on a dual layer disk.

There are two programs that have been used with great success.
1. DVD DeCrypter
2. DVD Shrink

I don't even know if these programs are even available, anymore, but, they've worked great for me.

With the release of dual layer DVD burners and disks, you might not need to 'shrink' the disks.

Try DVD Shrink, wonderful program. Do you have any burning software on your computer? Such as Nero? DVD shrink and decripter is to do just as the name states with the file, after that you need burning software to actually burn it. I will be looking for suggestions on that as well as I am not totally satisfied with Nero.

i have nero, but the program that works best with this new computer is cyberlink power 2 go.
like i said before, it downloaded fine off the 4.7 gig dvd, but when i try to burn to a 4.7 gig dvd, the program tells me the file grew to 8.2 gig.

DVD decrypter is a good program but it will not 'shrink' the data to the proper size to fit on a single layer disk. Shrink is still available at several sites (google) and does a good job of shrinking double layer data (7+ gb) down to a single layer (4.35 gb.) dvd.

These programs were primarily intended for video compression, so I don't know how a 'data' disk will work.

Hey TJC,
You never indicated what the file(s) is\are that you pulled of the DVD that you're trying to put onto your own disc.

DVD decrypter is no longer available...sorry to say. The bigshots in Hollyweird put an end to that.

Let me know if you need help with DVD Shrink. I use it all the time.

Good luck to ya.

Thanks for the link Huntsman.

From all the legal mumbo jumbo that I've read, no one is supposed to be hosting that file, or face being part of a lawsuit.

If 'someone' were to want to make a back-up copy of 'their own dvd', you would most likely need additional software to get around the CSS copy protection that many studios are now using. From what I've been told, ANYDVD is a good program.
