DVD-CD question

Can a DVD be converted into CDs?

I found an operating system DVD and want to know if it can be converted into multiple CD disks.

Also, can any MAC users here recommend a good MAC Forum site?

Thanks

Not in a manner that it will act like a M$ produced product; but it can be done.

What you'll need to do is make a bootable cd with a cd rom driver (http://www.bootdisk.com).

Download WinRar, Make 650 MB spanned RAR archives of the DVD, copy them to cd along with the DOS version of the RAR program.

Once the computer is booted up insert the cd's with the Rar program, and the split rar files and copy them to the HD.

When you boot from cd with a cd-rom driver you will have to type the drive letter of the cd rom drive to get to it, it should be "D:" or perhaps "E:"

I can't remember the exact command line to extract the spanned archive but you can find it in the instructions or by typing "rar***** /?"

After everything is copied, navigate to the I386 folder the run "Setup*****"

I guess fte doesn't like the 'exe'cutable extention.

A cd and a DVD are design differantly but can be read by the same reader. A CD has a single data layer and a smaller data capacity. A dvd has two layers of data and a lot more data capacity. I beleive you will find the DVD players have a higher frequency laser that is a finer beam then the cd players. This also helps to allow a higher data density.

You can get single layer DVD's @ 4.gb and Dual Layer @ 8.gb. As for converting a DVD to CD, it really isn't feasible. Plus DVD-rom units are a heck of a lot cheaper now than buying an outdated CD-Rom. Spend the extra $2 and buy a DVD-Burner.

If your thinking about that old computer/laptop that doesn't have a dvd player/burner. No problem. Buy a USB external case and slap the DVD-rom/Burner into it, and plug it into the USB port.

This seams to be getting a bit complicated for me.

I did send in a request to some MAC outfit to see if a superdrive/DVD ROM is
available for my particular MAC.

As for using a USB Port, it's only a USB 1.1

The "catch 22" is, that I'm not sure if a USB 2.0 card would work since it requires
an OSX installed, but I don't have any OS on the hard drive.

Maybe I'll just order the CD set ($150.00) and take a chance.

What MAC do you have. I can find out easy enough for you. Send me an email to pantharen@gmail.com and I'll get back to ASAP.

This is what I have found out about your Mac. You shouldn't have any problem putting a USB 2.0 card in one of the expansion slots.

The Apple Power Macintosh G4/667 (Digital Audio) features a 667 MHz PowerPC 7450 (G4) processor with the AltiVec "Velocity Engine" vector processing unit, 256k "on chip" level 2 cache, and 1 MB of level 3 backside cache. It shipped configured with 256 MB of RAM, a 60 GB Ultra ATA/66 hard drive, an 8X CD-RW drive, and a 4X AGP NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX graphics card with 32 MB of SDRAM. AirPort (802.11b) was available by custom configuration.
