DVD Decoders
I am having trouble reading DVD's on my computer.
I went and bought this program to hopefully take care of having a compatible decoder for XP.

I have installed the program but a pop-up states I still don't have a decoder.
I can't figure out why it doesn't.
Thought ?
DVD R/RW??? (Ditto for the de-crypter.)
The software that came with the DVD ROM should handle the de-cryption (for playback).
My son was concerned that he couldn't watch DVDs on his pc. (He only had a CD writer/player on his machine.) $99.00 and we had him both watching and & making DVDs.
Lastly, to de-crypt DVDs (for making backups) I downloaded 'DVD Decrypter'. It is a free download.
I've read a LOT of bad stuff about the 'decryption software' on the market. Lots of false claims. Wasted money. I don't see how you can decrypt and backup a DVD if you don't ad DVD burner, as the software on your link claims.
(Now, I know that with some decryption software, you can transfer the data into a format that would stay on your harddrive, and then watch the movie from the hdd.) This could be good IF you were going on a trip (with a laptop) and didn't want to take the discs, and possibly damage them. ???
I hope this has helped.

Did you install the burner? Check for the software on the disk.
Decrypting and backing up takes the 'DVD Decrypter' software and another called 'DVD Shrink', and I'm using Nero 6 Platinum.
Both the 'Decrypter' and 'Shrink' are free downloads.
EDIT: Just thought of this - - Is your video card compatible with video???
I asked the guy when I bought the DVD-CDRW if I needed anything special once I install the hardware, he said if you can watch videos on the net you should be okay.
The hardware is a Lite-on SOHD-167T DVD

The DVD unit could be defective. My first CD burner was bad, right out of the box.
Is the unit a new install?
Have you tried a re-boot, or shut down and do a cold boot?
This might make the changes to your registry.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
It reads CD's just fine.
The computer knows there is a DVD in the D/Drive as it shows the title.
It just won't play it and says the decoder isn't there.
Before taking the unit out, try re-installing the software again.
If that doesn't work, return the unit for another one and tell the people at the store what it is doing. My best guess is, the DVD unit is bad.

Edit - Go to this site and download Microsofts decoder checker. It will tell you what decoders you have on your system and whether they are compatible with WMP.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
I will see if I can find any freeware decoders that will work. I will say that other players, like the DIVX are better at playing DVD's that WMP. Many have more controls and also the ability to capture an image from the screen.
Edit2 - Here's a site that explains about WMP not playing DVD and some software to allow it to do it. Not freeware, but not expensive.

Will keep looking. Although I don't think there are any legal freeware as royalties have to be payed as explained below.
Here also is the site that explains why you can not play DVDs.

I would also look at the software that came with your Lite-on. It should have some kind of DVD player in the package.

Have you tried the DIVX player to see if it will play your DVDs okay?
As far as getting something that will work with WMP, the best bet is look at that second site or do a search for "dvd decoder" and search within for "windows media player". Maybe you will get lucky and find some freeware that will work with WMP. I didn't find anything earlier, but there were a lot of sites I didn't visit. If not you may have to buy something. I looked at my decode check, and the reason mine works is because I had purchased Intervideo's DVD player. That allows WMP to play DVDs. I also have a lot of other decoder in my list that are not compatable. These came with other software that I use to create DVDs.

Yes, I downloaded it last night.
Still won't play a DVD.
As stated before, I bought the lite-on and it didn't come with any software.
I questioned that & the reply was, that's why the DVD is only $40.00.
I got it at
