Actron does offer two models that show both an OBD1 adapter set and a CAN upgrade available. Cost is around $299-399 for the base unit.

If that 93 is a Ford, you really don't need a scan tool except for speed and convenience, a paper clip will do it.

The 93 is an F-150.

Can you elaborate on teh paper clip technique - or point me to it?

I have a couple of scanners and an OBDII module for my palm and LT.

If i need to check the codes i use a scanner, but for diagnostics the LT or palm are a godsent, they both utilize live graphs to monitor the individual sensors and the LT is able to log.

The Elm327 chip is capable of all protocols, incl CAN

I discovered several laptop solutions and have decided to go with one of those because of the monitoring. I have an old laptop I use in the shop, anyway.

So what laptop programs are you guys recommending? I am considering getting one as I have a couple of laptops sitting around and figure I should put them to use. One suggestion has been the AutoTap. Thoughts?

I have Alex Peper's setup. Good performance and support. A bit of an obtuse user interface and sparse instructions, though...

Cost was good plus the autor is local to me.

When I need to use log/graph and print functions. I use either my
  • Harrison OBScan(propriatory), or
  • OBD2allinone (Elm327) +CAN, .
For quick code scans
  • Inova 3100 (code book) or
  • Autopro E3199+CAN LCD descriptions
