2006 ABS Issue

The ABS light came on in my 2006 Escape and I used a scanner that read code C1234 (RF Speed Sensor). I changed the sensor with a new one from Ford and get the same ABS light, only now it only happens above 45 MPH. If the car is shut off, the light goes out until driving 45 MPH again. I looked at the tone rings with a strong light and can find no cracks. I cleaned them anyway, but get the same problem. The scanner is an Actron ABS scanner. Any suggestions?

I finally found the problem. The tone ring had a very small crack right at the base of one of the teeth. It did not move off of the hub and appeared to be secure. The only way to see it is to actually pull it apart. Changed the tone ring and everything works great.

Front axle shaft tone ring failures are very common on Escapes up to 2007 model years. I've replaced more than my share.

2006 Ford Escape XLT. 4Cyl, 64750 miles. Front Wheel Drive.

ABS started to kick in every time I'd start the car and brake the first few times. (Metal on Metal ABS sounds).

ABS light then comes on.

I pulled codes. Got one... C1234 from ABS module....Right Side Wheel Speed..Code.
I cleared codes, light went off for about 3 miles then came back on.

So, why me.

Well, I can order a new ABS sensor RH. or a new tone ring or both. Why I'm at it, I should probably order two tone rings as the other will fail too.

Ford, why not recall these? C'mon.

Brakes, tires, oil, gas, wipers....is all that a Ford buyer should ever have to replace under 75k....arguably.

Mine went on the pass. side driver side is original on my 01 with 170,000.I'd just fix the one that is acting up the tone ring breaks and you'll see the crack in it.Pretty easy to fix unbolt the axel shaft and pull the lower ball joint out of spindle.I bought the tone ring from Ford it was under $20.00

Similar

I have a similar issue. My ABS light came while driving over 55-60 mph 2 nights ago. Yesterday, I drive off made a left out of my complex and the brake pedal felt as if it were grinding something. I went home and got the explorer. After returning home from my errands, I drove the escape again, the abs light is now off. I make right turns no problems. As soon as I go left, and brake there is a grinding feeling in the pad. I tested it a few minutes ago and got several codes. Only 1 ABS code though at C1234 (rf speed sensor signal missing) The sensor is there and no visible signs of damage. I also have B1342 module defective, but I think this was already a problem as my reverse lights have not worked and I was told the module to the right of shifter needed replaced and re scanned by dealer. Any thoughts?

Solution

I may have found the solution, it appears the tone ring is cracked and missing a tooth right where sensor lines up. Hope its not too hard to change.

Easy to do two bolts where spindle bolts to strut.bolt for axle shaft and sway bar end link(I think) easier to get cv shaft out by turning the steering wheel to the left or right don't remember now.I had done them by pulling the lower ball joint in the past easier to unbolt the strut I think.

FWD

I have read a few places that the FWD models can not have the ring replaced as it is intact with the halfshaft. Does this sound correct or can it be replaced. I already have the tone ring from the dealer for 6$ but don't want to tear it apart just to order the shaft.
