Wiring for EEC Code Reading

I know this has been beaten like the old dead horse but I need clarification on code reading a non-OBD truck (mine is a '97 F250 HD 5.8L). The directions I got off Fordfuelinjection make it look like all I have to do is ground the Self Test Input but that seems wrong. I remember reading several threads that showed a jumper to the self test output, which makes more sense to me.

Anyone have a sketch that shows a working setup? My engine light works so I don't need the multi-meter or test light method (I hope) but I'll take it anyway.

Also need a procedure for doing the KOEO and KOER tests.

I have several threads bookmarked on my work computer which, surprisingly, is at work. Thanks for the help.

Ray

All you do is ground the STI Plug...thats it. I found a screw by the hood hinge and wrapped a wire on it. So every time I need codes, I got a wire close to the STI

Once grounded, turn the key to ON. The CEL will flash real fast. (ignore those flashes). Now you'll get your codes. Once all KOEO codes are shown, it'll repeat them. Now, its time for CM codes. It'll show them once, then repeat them again.

For KOER, ground STI and start engine. If you have a 6-cyl, the CEL will flash 3 times. Fora 8 cyl., it will flash 4 times. Once it flashes, turn the steering wheel 1/4 to the left, and 1/4 to the right. Also press the brake for a little while. If you have a manual tranny, you must hold the clutch in. If you have an E4OD auto tranny, you must cycle the O/D button once. After a while, you'll see 1 single flash. When you see it, romp the gas pedal at least 3/4 down. Just a quick rev will do. You will now get the KOER codes, and it will repeat them.

Thanks a bunch. The directions on fordfuelinjection sounded too easy. Off to pull codes now....when I finish painting the side of the house that is.

The jumper you are thinking of is between the STI and the signal return wire. The signal return is basically a sensor ground for the computer that is separate from the rest of the vehicle grounds to keep noise out of the sensor signals to the computer. So whether you ground the STI or jumper it to the signal return, you are doing pretty much the same thing.
